The Ice Onion can be obtained at the fourth area of the game, Hero's Hideaway. To get the Ice Onion, you will need the Scorch Guard for yourself and Oatchi before entering the Frozen Inferno Cave. You'll also need Ice Pikmin to freeze Hydro Jelly.
Once you have the Ice Onion, you can start collecting pellets and fallen enemies to further increase the number of Ice Pikmin that you have.
You won't find the Ice Onion until later in the game, so if you need Ice Pikmin, you can 100% a cave where Ice Pikmin are found, then repeatedly run through it and recruit them each time.
The Last-Frost Cavern and Aquiferous Summit are easy caves to get more of them early on.
Ice Pikmin have frozen bodies, giving them special icy abilities unlike anything before. An Ice Pikmin is:
Ice Pikmin have weaker attacks compared to most Pikmin, but they make up for it with the ability to temporarily freeze enemies they attack. Once the freeze gauge fills up around the target's health wheel, it will not be able to move and will shatter upon defeat.
Any enemies that are frozen mid-air will instantly fall and shatter. Enemies defeated while frozen will instead release nectar since they don't leave bodies behind. You can quickly freeze enemies by having all the Ice Pikmin attack at once with Oatchi's rush attack.
Throwing enough Ice Pikmin into a body of water or mud will make it freeze and become walkable for everyone else. Using your whistle to call the Ice Pikmin back will thaw the waters after around 8 seconds.
Ice Pikmin are the only type of Pikmin that can survive both mud and water. However, they can only float and can't dive to attack or transport objects across the water. It's also important to note that they are affected by sprays of water like sprinklers or water spouts, so you'll still need Blue Pikmin for these.
Since they're already made of ice, they aren't affected by enemies like the Icy Blowhog. They can also break ice walls and freeze hydro jelly to make it destructible.

Pikmin supposedly evolved from plants, yet there are also Pikmin species with bodies made of ice, known as ice Pikmin. How is this possible? The answer to this question lies in the fact that Ice Pikmin are parasitic by nature, and the ice serves as their host. The composition of this type of ice is, predictably, mostly water, but it resembles saline solution with faint concentrations of trace sodium ions, potassium ions, and calcium ions that function as neural transmitters. Interesingly, the ice exhibits no visual signs of melting or dripping when exposed to sunlight. This is due to its low-temperature core, which continuously creates more ice in order to maintain a consistent size. |
