Blue Pikmin, in Pikmin 4, are unlocked in the Sun-Speckled Terrace. Read on to learn how to unlock Blue Pikmin, how to get more of it, its abilities, as well as its Piklopedia Entry in this guide!
How to Unlock Blue Pikmin
Get the Blue Onion in Sun-Speckled Terrace
What You'll Need to Get Blue Pikmin
You'll need a few things before you can unlock Blue Pikmin in Pikmin 4:
- 2 Flarlic for 40 Pikmin Capacity
- Oatchi's Buff Skill at Level 3
- 15 Raw Materials
- 30 Ice Pikmin
- 10 other Pikmin types.
How to Get to the Blue Pikmin Onion
Move your base to the Rugged Scaffold (Base 2), and set out with your 40 Pikmin. Use 30 Ice Pikmin to freeze and cross the water, then use the leftover Pikmin to build a wall. You should now be able to climb up to the ledge with the Blue Onion!
How to Carry the Blue Pikmin Onion to Base
Carrying the Blue Onion back to base is the tricky part. Follow these exact steps to get the Blue Onion and unlock Blue Pikmin:
- Recall all Pikmin and climb the wall before the ice melts. You can leave Oatchi by the wall.
- Carry the Blue Onion until the Pikmin can't proceed.
- Recall all your Pikmin and freeze the water again.
- Recall Oatchi and have him and the rest of your Pikmin carry the Blue Onion to base!
Find Blue Pikmin in Secluded Courtyard
If you missed the Blue Onion in the previous area, you can still unlock them by finding them in the Secluded Courtyard cave in Blossoming Arcadia.
How to Get More Blue Pikmin
Get a Blue Onion to Grow Blue Pikmin
Once you get a Blue Onion, you can increase your Blue Pikmin population with pellets or fallen enemies. Have your Blue Pikmin carry these back to the onion to create more of them!
You can find Blue Onions in the Sun-Speckled Terrace and the Serene Shores.
Gather Wild Pikmin from Caves

Wild Blue Pikmin can also be found in caves that you've completed 100%. Pluck them or beat enemies they're fighting to add them to your squad.
Blue Pikmin Features and Abilities
Swim and Dive Underwater
Unlike other Pikmin types, Blue Pikmin don't drown. They're great for collecting objects and fighting enemies in, under, and across the water! There are even levels with underwater exploration that only Blue Pikmin can complete!
Immune to Water Obstacles
You'll encounter obstacles and enemies that use water, which will normally cause your Pikmin to panic. Blue Pikmin are unbothered by water, so you can pass through sprinklers and destroy water spouts easily with them.

It wouldn't be overstating to say that watching these Pikmin navigate the water with the grace of a fish is one of the most lovely things to behold on this whole planet! But if you really want to see them swimming, you'll need to offer them some live bait! |

The accepted theory is that Pikmin evolved from terrestrial root vegetables, and so would be unable to breathe underwater and subsequently drown. Yet the Blue Pikmin possess a gill resembling a mouth on their head, which enables them to be active underwater. While on land, they leaf and flower like other Pikmin species, and they breathe through the stomata on their skin, indicating they must be neutrally amphibious. Pigment proteins on the surface of their body essentially perform the same photosynthetic process as cyanobacteria, for example, which is what gives them their striking color. |
