The Gardener Class is a very slow class when it comes to making use of its abilities. It's best to rush the story and level up as fast as you can when joining a new scenario if you want to play as a Gardener.
Since Gardener requires faster progress, it's best if you team-up with other players to help you out. They can help you go through the high-level strongholds and get all the materials you need.
Multiplayer Guide: How to Play With Friends

The Loamy Soil, Compost Bins, and Fertilizers are not unlocked by default for the Gardener. You will have to unlock them yourself before you can build your garden and grow your crops.
You can find these nodes under the Logistics tabs in the Memetics menu.

You can setup an automatic farm with Generators and Water Irrigation System in the game. However, most of the materials required to build these will be in the mid or endgame, so you will have to get some help and try to level up quickly.
This should help you manage your farm without interferring too much and allow you to focus on other things.

It is ideal to have these deviations as they can help you manage your farm and crops. It will take some time to get them, but it would be worth the time as a Gardener.
All Deviant (Deviation) Locations

Always plant and graft crops when you're playing as a Gardener. You can graft crops with other crops or with deviant parts to create different hybrid of plants.
These plants will reward you with materials to help you with growing crops or assist with combat and guarding the base.
You must collect Biomechanical Parts from enemies and graft them with your crops. You will be able to get mutated plants, which you can put in your Portable Planter Box to bring it with you.

Playing as a Gardener will require a lot of patience and time to construct your garden and make a viable area to grow your crops. It will be very slow at the start, but once you get all the structures and a place to grow your crops, you will be able to progress faster than other classes.
You can bring a plant with you using the Portable Planter Box. It's best to get one that can help with combat as the other types of plants is better to stay on the base.
The Portable Planter Box is one of the starting items for the Gardener, so you don't have to worry about where to get it.
