Once Human Temperature Guide

The Temperature in Once Human can greatly affect your gameplay if left unchecked. Learn how Temperature affects gameplay and how to control it in this guide!

Temperature Explained

Body Temperature vs Ambient Temperature

Before we start, it is important to know the difference between body temperature and ambient temperature.

Body temperature is your own character's temperature levels which is affected by external factors like temperature resistance and ambient temperature. Depending on these two, you will either be in a normal Cozy state or be afflicted with debuffs based on how severe your body temperature becomes.

Ambient temperature is the environment's temperature, which can change depending on the time of day, the weather, or the location itself.

Body Temperature Levels

State Temperature Effect
Frost < -30°C ・Lose Energy faster and hypothermia becomes more severe
・Gain a stack of Frozen every 3 seconds, making you lose 5% HP per second and slows your movement down
・Character dies at 4 stacks of Frozen
Chilly -7.5°C ~ -30°C ・Quickly lose Energy and experience hypothermia, which continuously drops your body temperature
Cozy 15°C ~ 40°C Body temperature becomes normal
Heat 40°C ~ 70°C ・Quickly lose Hydration and experience heatstroke, which continuously raises your body temperature
Blaze < 70°C ・Lose Hydration faster and heatstroke becomes more severe
・Gain a stack of Combustion every 3 seconds, making you lose 5% HP per second and reduces Gear Durability by 1%
・Character dies at 4 stacks of Combustion

Stay in a Cozy Temperature

Thermometer below the minimap

You'd want your character to stay at a Cozy temperature at all times as this is the range where you can play normally without the debuffs of having an abnormal temperature. Check the Thermometer below the minimap to monitor your body temperature.

Having the right amount of resistance in a given ambient temperature keeps you within the Cozy range, indicated by the gray segment on the Thermometer. You can expand this range by adding cold or heat resistance based on the ambient temperature.

Temperature Effects

Low Temperature Causes Chilly and Frost

Not having enough cold resistance in a low temperature area puts you in a Chilly state. You will quickly lose Energy and have your temperature drop continuously through hypothermia while in this state.

In dangerously cold areas, you can reach a Frost state that causes more severe effects than Chilly. You'll also gain a stack of Frozen every 3 seconds that continuously deals damage and reduces movement speed. Having 4 stacks of Frozen instantly kills your character, if hypothermia fails to do it.

Cold Resistance Guide

High Temperature Causes Heat and Blaze

High temperature environments (and possibly hot weather) will be introduced in the later phases of The Way of Winter which can put you in a Heat state that affects Hydration and cause heatstroke instead.

When the temperature becomes overwhelmingly high, you will experience Blaze and gain stacks of Combustion, which kills you at 4 stacks after continuously burning your HP and reducing Gear Durability.

How to Change Body Temperature

Wear Gear with Cold or Heat Resist

different hide effects

One of the ways to survive the extreme temperatures is to wear gear with either Cold Resist or Heat Resist stats. Such gears can be obtained easily through crafting and can be adjusted by using animal hides that provide the resistance that you need.

Take note that only Top and Bottoms pieces can receive Cold or Heat Resist from hides.

Hides with Cold Resist Hides with Heat Resist
・Deer Hide
・Jungle Wolf Skin
・Rabbit Fur
・Wool
・Bear Skin
・Velvet
・Sealskin
・Mountain Cowhide
・Grassland Wolf Skin
・Rawhide
・Crocodile Hide
・Valley Cowhide

Unlock the Polar Expedition Memetic

Thermoium
・Gravel x 20
Heatium
・Thermoium x 1
・Charcoal x 20
Charcoal
・Log x 5
Thermoium
・Gravel x 20
Coldium
・Thermoium x 1
・Ice Cube x 10
Ice Cube
・Purified Water x 1

You can also bring a Heatium or a Coldium with you while exploring to quickly gain temperature resistance. These can be obtained by unlocking the Polar Expedition Memetic and crafting them with Thermoium.

A Heatium provides +10 Cold Resist and Frost Resist while a Coldium provides +10 Heat Resist and Burn Resist. They will change back to Thermoium one hour after crafting.

Consume Food that Provide Resistance

Sunny Ginger

For quick temperature resistance boosts, you can prepare food using ingredients like Spikemato and Ice Melon. Even these ingredients can provide resistance buffs when eaten, albeit less effective.

Build a Thermal Tower

Staring from the second phase of Way of Winter, players can build a Thermal Tower outside their territory. One of the many effects of Thermal Towers is its ability to regulate the temperature in a large area around it, which means you can either raise or lower the temperature to combat the ambient temperature.

Have the Bed: Heat Preservation Specialization

Bed Heat Preservation specialization

For cold environment, sleeping on a bed for at least 10 seconds while having the Bed: Heat Preservation Memetic specialization unlocked gives you a 30% Cold Resist boost for 30 minutes!
