One of the ways to survive the cold is to equip gear with Cold Resistance. Such gears can be obtained easily through crafting. Just make sure you use materials that provide Cold Resistance!
In the early game, you can hunt down wild deer for their hide. They can be found almost everywhere in the overworld, especially in areas far from enemies.
Take the deer hide to your camp, choose a gear piece to craft, and use it to give the gear a Cold Resistance stat!
Now that you have basic Cold Resist to endure the temperature of Vena Fjord, you can hunt mutated bears and flamingoes in this subregion and upgrade your Cold Resistance with their skins and feathers!

Another easy way to gain Cold Resistance is having a Heatium in your backpack. This can be obtained by unlocking the Polar Expedition Memetic and crafting it using one Thermoium and twenty Charcoal.
A Heatium provides +10 Cold Resist and Frost Resist while it's in your inventory, but will change back to Thermoium one hour after crafting it.
For quick cold resistance boosts, you can consume the Spikematoes or Sunny Gingers that you've picked up while roaming. These can also be used in preparing dishes to improve their effects.
If you're in colder areas, especially at night, you might want to have warmth-producing facilities in your camp like a Campfire. Facilities like these can help stabilize your temperature by keeping you warm in your base.
In the second phase of Way of Winter, players can start building a Thermal Tower outside their territory. One of the many effects of Thermal Towers is its ability to regulate the temperature in a large area around it.
Not having enough Cold Resistance in a low temperature area (-7.5°C ~ -30°C) can put you in a Chilly state, which causes Hypothermia and makes you rapidly lose Energy.
In more severe cases, overwhelmingly low temperatures (< -30°C) can put you in a Frost state. While in this state, you gain one stack of Frozen every three seconds. Your character will instantly die once it reaches four stacks.
