You can survive the hot temperatures of Once Human's Way of Winter by stacking Heat Resistance on your character. Learn how to get more Heat Resistance, survive the heat, and avoid dying from heatstroke in this guide!

One of the ways to survive the heat is to equip gear with Heat Resistance. Such gears can be obtained easily through crafting. Just make sure you use materials that provide Heat Resistance!
Hunt down crocodiles in Wish Land - East and carve their hides for your armor. Take note that you can add Heat Resist through hides on the Top and Bottoms pieces only.
How to Get Different Hides in Way of Winter
Thermoium ・Gravel x 20 |
▶ | Coldium ・Thermoium x 1 ・Ice Cube x 10 |
Ice Cube ・Purified Water x 1 |
Another easy way to gain Heat Resistance is having a Coldium in your backpack. This can be obtained by unlocking the Polar Expedition I Memetic and crafting it using one Thermoium and once Ice Cube.
A Coldium provides +10 Heat Resist and Burn Resist while it's in your inventory, but will change back to Thermoium one hour after crafting it.
If your Heat Resistant gear and Coldium aren't enough, you should craft a Chaosium Lantern and start farming Chaosiums for its fuel. Make the lantern your last resort as it burns Chaosiums fairly quickly and Chaosiums are difficult to find and craft.
To use the Chaosium Lantern, equip it in your hotbar and press it when it gets really hot to "toggle" it on and significantly reduce the temperature.
Now that you can unlock more dishes through the Memetics menu, you can cook dishes that provide even better temperature resistances! The Integrated Kitchen II Memetic allows you to cook a dish with +20 Heat Resist.
We recommend making some Chilled Ice Melon Soup as they give both increased Heat Resist and Pollution Resist.
Another simple way to survive the heat is to explore at night when it's colder! The temperature drops by 10 degrees at night so that gives you an instant protection against hot areas.
In the second phase of Way of Winter, players can start building a Thermal Tower outside their territory. One of the many effects of Thermal Towers is its ability to regulate the temperature in a large area around it.
Considering its range limit, Thermal Towers are best placed near settlements so you can loot items in them more safely. The blueprint for the Thermal Tower must be unlocked in the Memetics menu first before you can build one.
For emergency cooling, such as if you accidentally run into an extremely hot place, the Sticky Ice Crystals from the Ice Pot Deviant can help you cool down as you find your way back to a safe zone. This Deviant can be obtained from the Deviation: Ice Pot quest.
State | Temperature | Effect |
---|---|---|
Heat | 40°C ~ 70°C | ・Quickly lose Hydration and experience heatstroke, which continuously raises your body temperature |
Blaze | < 70°C | ・Lose Hydration faster and heatstroke becomes more severe ・Gain a stack of Combustion every 3 seconds, making you lose 5% HP per second and reduces Gear Durability by 1% ・Character dies at 4 stacks of Combustion |
Not having enough Heat Resistance in a high temperature area (40°C ~ 70°C) will put you in the Heat state, which makes you lose Hydration quickly.
When it gets even hotter (< 70°C), Heat will worsen into the Blaze state where you start gaining one stack of Combustion every three seconds. Your character will instantly die once it reaches four stacks.
Your armor will receive Durability reduction per second while in Blaze state, so make sure you're prepared before exploring the new areas!
Needless to say, no matter how high your Heat Resist stat is, falling into lava results in instant death. Watch your step while exploring the Ember Stand!
