How to Start Solve the Open Hand Temple Murders

Talk to Sister Yannis at the Open Hand Temple

Speak to Sister Yannis at the Open Hand Temple, north of Rivington. You'll find her talking with a Hollyphant, Inspector Valeria, about the recent murder of Father Lorgan, and the apparent suicide of the accused culprit, Brilgor.

Search For Clues

At the beginning of the quest, you'll need to investigate and search for clues around the area in order to look for evidence that will unveil the real culprit of the murders and prove Brilgor's innocence.

Note: You do not have to look into every single clue in the temple as investigating one of these should already provide you with enough information on where to go next.

Clue 1: Talk to Father Lorgan's Corpse

Father Lorgan's corpse is in the dormitory behind the temple. Use the Speak with Dead spell on his lifeless body to talk to him.

Ask Father Lorgan who killed him and where was he murdered. He'll mention a dwarf dressed in red had murdered him in the temple cellar underneath the temple.

Clue 2: Talk to Brilgor's Corpse

Go to the graveyard behind the temple and look for a Dirt Mound. You will need a shovel to dig through it, thankfully there's one laying on the ground within close proximity it.

After digging, destroy the casket by attacking it to reveal Brilgor's corpse. Use the Speak with Dead spell on Brilgor's dead body. Ask him how to get to the tunnels under the temple and he'll mention that there are hidden buttons near the tunnels to access it.

Clue 3: Father Lorgan's Diary

Head to the other Dormitory to the west, this is located right beside the graveyard. Lockpick the chest in the middle, then you'll immediately roll a Perception check which upon succeeding, you'll notice that there's a book hidden in a secret compartment inside the chest.

Grab Father Lorgan's diary inside and read it to find out about the secret cellar hidden beneath the temple.

This method is the best choice for those without the Speak with Dead spell in order to gain information regarding the murders.

Investigate the Hidden Tunnel

Enter the Tunnels Through a Hatch in the Kitchen

Go inside the kitchen which is on the northwestern corner of the temple. Open the Ornate Wooden Hatch and enter it.

The entrance to the Hidden Tunnel is located behind the altar but it's completely sealed off. To open it, examine the Heraldic Signs posted on the walls near the statues. You will need to pass a Perception check before being able to interact with the signs.

Defeat the Shapeshifters

Enter the hidden tunnels and you'll come across some Shapeshifters. Defeat them and loot the ”Key with a flower motif”, also known as the Flower Key, from Zomm.

The Shapeshifters are extremely weak to necrotic damage so use that to your advantage.

Retrieve the Murder Weapon

The murder weapon is hidden in a small hole on the edge of the cliff near the wooden platform. Interact with it and grab the Stillmaker, the weapon that was used to commit the murders.

Sneak Past the South Span Checkpoint

To get past the South Span Checkpoint, take the small path to the east of the checkpoint bridge until you reach a wooden platform with a ladder on it.

Go up the ladder, then jump on top of the stack of boxes until you find the South Span Wyrm's Crossing waypoint. This is the easiest way to sneak past the guards as talking to them will result in combat.

Use the Flower Key to Obtain the Bloodstained Parchment

Go to the Attic of Fraygo's Flophouse

Head inside Fraygo's Flophouse which is just across the South Span Wyrm's Crossing waypoint. Make your way up towards the 2nd floor, and look for a ladder that leads to the attic.

Use the Flower Key on the Wardrobe

The Flower Key is used on the Wardrobe to unlock a hidden door leading to a secret room. This is the lair of the Open Hand Temple's murderer who is revealed to be a Bhaalist.

How to Use the Flower Key

Take the Bloodstained Parchment

The Bloodstained Parchment is on the desk beside the Temple Plans. This small piece of paper is a list of murder targets and victims used by the unidentified Bhaalist killer who plans to frame the Absolute for the series of murders.

Upon reading it, it also lists Father Lorgan's name which should be enough evidence to fully resolve the murder case.

Show the Parchment to Valeria

Take the Bloody Parchment to Valeria who is at the Sharess' Caress across Fraygo's Flophouse. You can find her drinking on the second floor of the tavern.

She will accept the evidence but still won't be convinced. She'll then ask you to bring the Target List to Gauntlet Devella in the Lower City while also giving you a Lower City Pass which allows you entrance into Baldur's Gate.

Take note that while you can indeed hand out the murder weapon as part of the evidence during the dialogue conversation, the only proof you'll need to show is the parchment.

Lower City Pass

The Lower City Pass grants you entrance to Wyrm's Rock Fortress directly north of the South Span checkpoint. Speak to Blaze Elin at the bridge and show her your pass. She will immediately let you through the bridge and into the lower city of Baldur's Gate.
