Rescue Wulbren

How to Start Rescue Wulbren

Note: The following steps were done in a world state where Barcus Wroot was rescued from the Windmill in Blighted Village.

Speak to Barcus Wroot at your Camp

You can start this quest by speaking to Barcus Wroot at your camp after rescuing him and his fellow Deep Gnomes from True Soul Nere and the Druergar at the Grymforge.

You need to either kill True Soul Nere and the Grymforge Druerger or convince Elder Brithvar to betray True Soul Nere and then convince him to release the Deep Gnomes.

Save the Grymforge Gnomes

Only Appears When Rescued from the Windmill

Barcus Wroot will only appear at the Grymforge if you rescued him from the Goblins in the Blighted Village during Act I.

Head to Moonrise Towers

You'll need to make your way to Moonrise Towers, which is southwest of the Last Light Inn in the southern part of the Shadow Cursed Lands.

Requires Moonlantern or Pixie's Blessing

This area requires more potent magical protection than what Isobel can offer so it's a recommended to get the Moonlight Lantern from the drider Kar'niss by ambushing him with the Harpers.

You may also free the pixie inside the lantern who will grant you Pixie's Blessing. This provides full immunity to the shadows in the Shadow Cursed Lands without requiring you to equip the Moonlantern.

Seek Protection from the Shadow Curse

Head Down the Prison Area

Once at Moonrise Towers, head to the southwestern doors into a room with blood on the floor leading to the stairs. Head down the stairs to enter the prison area.

Talk to Wulbren Bongle

Talk to Wulbren Bongle and offer to help him. If you rescued Barcus from the Windwill in Blighted Village and save the deep gnomes from the druergar and True Soul Nere in Grymforge, you can simply tell him that Barcus sent you.

Otherwise, you'll need to Persuade or Deceive him that you'lre helping them break out. He'll then ask you that he needs a tool or bludgeoning weapon so that he can destroy the wall.

Note: Wulbren will also free the nearby Tieflings once he escaped, allowing you to finish the Rescue the Tieflings side quest.

Rescue the Tieflings (Shadow-Cursed Lands)

Dispatch the Guards

You'll need to dispatch the two patrolling scrying eyes as well as the Warden and Adept Keris so that the gnomes and tieflings can safely escape.

Although the Warden is the more difficult opponent, we recommend taking out the scrying eyes first as they can call reinforcements.

Keep the Fight in the Prison Area

If engaging The Warden and Adept Keris directly, avoid moving away from the prison area to avoid alerting the two guards near the stairs or the prison guard stationed at the northwest corner of the prison.

Note: The two guards near the stairs will not investigate the prison as long as you kill the scrying eyes before they call reinforcements.

Retrieve Wulbren's Hammer

Once the guards and scrying eyes dead, head up the second floor of the Warden's quarters located in the central area of the prison which is accessible by a ladder and retrieve Wulbren's Hammer from the desk.

Give Wulbren the Hammer

Head back to Wulbren and give him his hammer and tell him that it's time to escape. He'll start destroying his prison wall and eventually destroy the tiefling's prison wall as well.

Open the Prison Gate

Head back to the Warden's office and pull the Cell Two Lever to open Wulbren's cell, then follow the path to the hidden dock area.

Escape with the Prisoners

Wulbren will wait until the tieflings are done untying the rope holding the boat. Once that's done, speak to him and tell him that you'll accompany them to the Last Light Inn.

Arriving at the Last Light Inn

Harper Arthus will request to inspect the prisoners once you arrive at the Last Light Inn. Reassure Wulbren and the prisoners will form a line so that Arthus can inspect him.

This will take a few minutes but he'll let the prisoners pass eventually, and they'll make their way up into the Last Light Inn.

Return to Barcus Wroot

Return and speak to Barcus Wroot and tell him that Wulbren has returned safely. After a brief and tense conversation between the two, Barcus will give you the Brilliant Retort as a reward for saving Wulbren.

Completing the sidequest rewards you with the Brilliant Retort, a unique bomb that deals force damage.
