As of writing, Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't have controller support in-game. The reason for that is the game has a lot of tooltips, and it will be hard to implement everything in any controllers.
Don't lose hope! There is still a chance for Baldur's Gate 3 to have controller support, as one of its predecessor, Divinity: Original Sin 2, have full controller support and runs smoothly on all its available platforms.
Moreover, the game will release on PS5, where you can only use a controller to play the game.
Available Platforms: Is Baldur's Gate III Coming to Consoles?
Players will have to tough it out using the Steam Controller Support for now, as the game doesn't have it yet. You can use the Steam Controller Support by going to the Big Picture mode and setting up your controller and its controls from the Controller Settings tab.
If you bought the game on GOG, you can add it to your Steam Library for free as a Non-Steam Game.
You can do this by clicking the Add a Gane button on the lower left and selecting the game's executable file. It should appear in your Steam Library afterward.
Go to Big Picture mode after that and start setting up the controller for the game!
Baldur's Gate 3 is playable on Steam Deck, but similar to playing it on PC with a controller; it's not a smooth experience and will take some time to figure out the controls. If you're set on playing on a controller, this might be the best option you have for now.
