Equipping the Thermal Defense gear gives you immunity from ice damage. It also prevents you from getting frozen!

You can unlock the Thermal Defense before the sparklium requirement if you, Oatchi, or your Pikmin take any ice damage. This can be from ice walls or enemies like the Icy Blowhog.
Once it's unlocked, you can purchase it from Russ at the Lab for 50 Raw Materials.
How to Solve All Obstacle Types
Alternatively, you can purchase the Thermal Defense once you reach a total of 4800 Sparklium if you've managed to avoid taking the specific elemental damage.
The effects of the Thermal Defense are automatically activated once you get it. You can unequip it at any time by pressing + for the Tablet Menu and going to Gear and Skills.
