How to Unlock Below the Surface

Finish Main Mission The Falling Wall

Borderlands 4 - Below the Surface Side Mission Location

To start Below the Surface, you must have finished the main mission The Falling Wall. Finishing the mission also grants you access to the Dominion region.

Once finished, go to Terminus District in the Dominion region and enter a passage to a facility. There, talk to Ted.

Reach the Labs

1 Talk to Ted at the entrance to a facility.

Borderlands 4 - Grappling Hook Up Facility
After talking to Ted, he will give you a keycard. Run past him until you reach a wall. Look up and use the grappling hook to get to the upper area of the facility.

Borderlands 4 - To Upper Facility Door
At the top, you should see a large entryway. You will have to use your grappling hook twice to head further up.

Borderlands 4 - Keycard to Locked Door
Once you reach the upper level, Order forces will intercept you. Kill them all before using the keycard to access the console by the door. The door should reveal an elevator inside, but it is not accessible.

Borderlands 4 - Take Vent to Reach Labs.
Look to the left to see a stack of crates. Go behind the crates to see a vent. Step back to create enough space to pull off the vent lid with your grappling hook. Enter the vent to drop down inside the facility.

Borderlands 4 - Go to Elevator Shaft
Enter the room ahead and turn right to see the elevator shaft. Jump down to reach the facility's sub-level access.

Borderlands 4 - Climb Ladder
Enter the level flooded in water. Swim across to get to the ladder.

Borderlands 4 - Take Right to Bloody Entrance
Climb up the ladder to enter the next room through the hatch. Leave the room to enter a corridor and take the entrance with blood on the wall.

Borderlands 4 - Clear Area of Creeps
Upon entry, you will see a locked door to the left. You have to approach it to open it. On the other side of the door is a large Thorn Creep. Kill the creeps in the room.

Borderlands 4 - Vent Above Ammo Vending Machine
After clearing the room, pass through the blown-off door and kill more creeps in the corridor. At the end of the corridor is a locked door and an Ammo Vending Machine. Look up to find a vent leading to the labs proper.

Borderlands 4 - Clear Creep Infestation
In a lab area, large Vile creeps will be fought together alongside smaller creeps. Clear the lab of the creep infestation.
3 Next, to reactivate the elevator, go up the steps to a room at the corner and press the button on the console.
4 Immediately after pressing the button, a horde of Vile experiments will attack. Kill them all.
5 After killing all the experiments, wait for Ted to appear at the lab then talk to him.
6 Wait until Ted walks into the chamber, after which he will transform into a corrupted form of himself. Kill CorrupTed.
7 After killing CorruptTed, go to the elevator to leave the lab. Exit back to Terminus District to end the mission.
