You should save your Golden Keys in Borderlands 4 if you are planning to play Ultimate Vault Hunter mode. Learn when to save or spend Golden Keys by reading below!
List of Contents

If you want to play Ultimate Vault Hunter mode, the game's endgame content, it would be best to hold on to Golden Keys. It has some of the hardest encounters in the game.
Using Golden Keys, after you unlock Ultimate Vault Hunter, can give you a headstart in the new Challenges, Weekly Big Encore Missions, and Weekly Wildcard Missions. You can also open it when you are trying to get a stronger item for a Weekly mission.
The weapons you will receive when opening the Golden Key Chest will be the same level as the character who opened it. Your Golden Keys are shared amongst all your characters, so you can open it to get Legendary items at different levels.
The max level cap, as of writing, is Level 50. So, if you want the strongest items from a Golden Key, level up a character to max level.

Generally, if you should spend your Golden Keys for an immediate improvement for your build. It is the fastest way to get stronger gear since you do not need to farm. A convienent time to use them would be near the end of the campaign so you can finish the story easily.
However, it is a limited resource, so spend it wisely. If you get something that does not fit in your current build, you can always respec your skill tree or store it in the Bank for another character.

To get Golden Keys, you must first make a SHiFT Account. Then, you can input SHiFT Codes given by Gearbox Software, the developers of the game, by following the steps above. Some of the SHiFT codes will expire so input them as soon as you can!
