How to Beat Lance

Use Ice or Electric Type Pokemon

Lance's Pokemon is mostly weak against Ice-type and Electric-type Pokemon. Make sure your Pokemon are at least two levels higher than all of his Pokemon. Alternatively, you can also grind until Level 65 since the Champion has higher Pokemon levels and you will be facing against them with your current team.

Get A Strong Ice Pokemon

Bringing a strong Ice-type Pokemon is highly recommended for this fight to quickly take care of Lance's Dragon-types before they can get out of hand.

Lapras is a great choice for this due to it being a Water-Ice type, making it a viable pick against other Elite Four trainers like Bruno, who has a couple of Rock-type Pokemon, and the Champion, who has a Fire-type Pokemon. It can learn Thunderbolt through a TM, making it also effective against Lance's Flying-type Pokemon.

Get A Strong Electric Pokemon

Getting a strong Electric-type Pokemon that can learn or be taught Thunderbolt through a TM is highly recommended. Raichu is a good choice to get, as it learns Thunderbolt by default and is purely an Electric-type. Its high Speed also mostly guarantees it to get the first turn.

Another good choice would be Magneton, since its Steel-typing can provide it resistance against other types. It has high SP. ATK, which makes Thunderbolt even more lethal. You can get a Thunderbolt TM by purchasing it in the Game Corner of Celadon City.

Best Team to Beat Lance

Recommended Pokemon to Bring

Pokemon Recommended Moves
Pokemon FRLG - Lapras Lapras
Pokemon FRLG - Water Pokemon FRLG - Ice
Surf

・Ice Beam can take care of the Dragon-types due to STAB and type advantage.
・Can also learn Thunderbolt to deal with the Flying-types if needed.
Pokemon FRLG - Raichu Raichu
Pokemon FRLG - Electric

・Thunderbolt can one-shot most of Lance's Flying-types if properly leveled.
・Provides a good Steel-type damaging move via Iron Tail that can be used for other Elite Four trainers and the Champion.
Pokemon FRLG - Magneton Magneton
Pokemon FRLG - Electric Pokemon FRLG - Steel

・Thunderbolt can one-shot most of Lance's Flying-types if properly leveled.
・Its Steel-typing provides resistance against more types. However, Ground-type becomes even deadlier.

You can bring a full party of six Pokemon into the Elite Four battle, but the team shown here focuses on the best counters for Lance's lineup.

The remaining slots can be filled with any other strong Pokemon you’ve trained including your starter, but these three are the core picks that make the fight much more manageable.

When Starting with Bulbasaur

Pokemon FRLG - Venusaur Venusaur Pokemon FRLG - Lapras Lapras Pokemon FRLG - Magneton Magneton
Pokemon FRLG - Raichu Raichu

Venusaur will have a hard time against Lance's Pokemon because half of them are Flying-types. It's recommended to swap out to an Electric-type Pokemon like Magneton or Raichu who can easily handle them and use an Ice-type Pokemon like Lapras for Lance's Dragon-type Pokemon.

When Starting with Charmander

Pokemon FRLG - Charizard Charizard Pokemon FRLG - Lapras Lapras Pokemon FRLG - Magneton Magneton
Pokemon FRLG - Raichu Raichu

Charizard might also have a hard time against Lance's team if brought out against Gyarados and Aerodactyl. Gyarados has natural resistance against Charizard's Fire-type moves due to it being part Water-type. We recommend switching to an Electric-type Pokemon who can easily deal with it.

Definitely avoid Aerodactyl as it has high speed and can one-shot Charizard with Ancient Power, a Rock-type move which Charizard is weak to as a Fire-Flying type. Swap out to another Pokemon when you see Lance bring out Aerodactyl.

When Starting with Squirtle

Pokemon FRLG - Blastoise Blastoise Pokemon FRLG - Lapras Lapras Pokemon FRLG - Magneton Magneton
Pokemon FRLG - Raichu Raichu

Blastoise's Water-type moves are only strong against Aerodactyl and should otherwise be kept as backup. Lapras can easily take care of Lance's Dragon-type Pokemon while Magneton or Raichu can take care of Lance's other Flying-type Pokemon.
