Those with asterisks are optional objectives.
| 1 | After defeating the sixth gym leader, Sabrina, in Saffron City, go back to Pallet Town and head southwest to see a body of water. Use Surf to travel south along Route 20. |
|---|---|
| 2 | Route 20 is filled with trainers you can challenge, as well as decent Water-type Pokemon you can capture. These Pokemon duels are optional, but will be triggered if you pass by a trainer's line-of-sight. |
| 3 | Once you make your way down, you will arrive at Cinnabar Island. |
| 1 | In Cinnabar Island, you can rest and save up in the Poke Center, as well as, restock items in the Poke Mart. Once done, you can head to the Gym to notice the doors are locked. |
|---|---|
| 2 | To open the Seventh Gym, head to the Pokemon Mansion and make your way down. |
| 1 | Upon entering the mansion, head up the stairway at the end of the hall. There is a trainer you can challenge and a switch in the room past the stairs. Activate the switch and head east to find Escape Rope and an unlocked room with a Protein. |
|---|---|
| 2 | After reaching the 2nd floor, you can find a switch to your left. Activate it, then make your way to the northmost room and climb the set of stairs going up. • In the northeast and southeast rooms, you can find Calcium and Zinc, respectively. • If you head up the immediate stairs from where you entered, it leads to a separate room in the third floor with a trainer and a Max Potion. |
| 3 | On the third floor, you'll need to interact with the statue with a hidden switch. Before that though, make sure to pick up an Iron in the eastern room. Afterwards, interact with the secret switch on the statue to open the southern part of floor. You will need to fight a Trainer here, but continue due east. Use an Item Finder to get a Rare Candy. |
| 4 | Go down the stairs south of the Rare Candy location to get an HP Up. Afterwards, return to the floor where you got the Rare Candy then jump off on the area left of the doctor. |
| 5 | After jumping down the ledge, challenge Scientist Ted. Then, head down the stairs in the same room. Make sure to pick up the Carbos southeast of the stairs before going down. It is quite hard to miss. |
| 6 | Head to the room to your left and defeat Burglar Lewis. Then, activate the switch in the room to open the gate to the northeastern room. There is a Max Potion in the western-most hallway, past the room with the first switch and Burglar Lewis. |
| 7 | Next, head to the northeastern room to find a scientist eager to challenge you. Defeat him, then activate the switch in the same room. Lastly, head west and get the Secret Key on the table. • Use an Item Finder next to the switch to get an Elixir. • Get TM14 Blizzard in the room to the left of the second switch. • Pick up TM22 Solarbeam south of the room where you found the Secret Key. |
| 8 | After getting the Secret Key, make sure to deactivate both switches in the order opposite of when you explored the room. Then, make your way upstairs and exit the mansion by making an east-south U-turn. |
| 1 | After completing the Pokemon Mansion and obtaining the Secret Key, you can unlock the doors to the gym and attempt to challenge Blaine, the fire-type gym leader. This gym involves solving pop quizzes correctly to avoid engaging in combat with the extra trainers. Make sure to visit the nearby Pokemon Center to restore your Pokemon to full health! |
|---|---|
| 2 | In the first room, answer YES to the question: "Caterpie evolves into Metapod?" to avoid a fight. If you do fight Burglar Quinn, he'll use a lvl. 36 Growlithe and Vulpix. |
| 3 | Make your way northwest to find the next question and answer NO when asked if "There are nine certified Pokemon League Badges?". The trainer, Super Nerd Avery, here has a lvl. 34 Ponyta, Charmander, Vulpix, and Growlithe. There is an additional trainer, Super Nerd Erik, you can choose to challenge, featuring lvl. 36 Vulpix twice, and a Ninetales. |
| 4 | Head to the room south and answer NO to the question, "Poliwag evolves three times?", to avoid fighting Burglar Ramon who has a lvl. 41 Ponyta. |
| 5 | Head further south and answer NO to "Are electric moves effective against Ground-type Pokemon?". Failing to answer correctly will pit you against Super Nerd Derek with one lvl. 41 Rapidash. |
| 6 | Move west and answer NO to the question: "Pokemon of the same kind and level are not identical?". If you get it wrong, you will challenge Burglar Dusty with his lvl. 37 Vulpix and Growlithe. |
| 7 | Next, go north and answer the last quiz by saying NO to the question, "TM28 contains Tombstony?". Giving the wrong answer makes you fight Super Nerd Zac, who has a lvl. 37 Growlithe and Vulpix. |
| 8 | After answering all quizzes, you can finally fight Blaine who has four Pokemon in his roster. Defeat his lvl. 42 Growlithe, lvl. 40 Ponyta, lvl. 42 Rapidash, and lvl. 47 Arcanine by using Water-type moves on them! Once you defeat him, you will receive the Volcanobadge and TM38 Fire Blast! |
Located to the right of Cinnabar Island stands the Seafoam Islands, an optional area that features a boulder puzzle. If you complete the puzzle, you get to fight Articuno and even capture it as your own Pokemon!
Take note that you can only progress this area by starting from the left entrance which is accessible from Fuschia City going south, then west.
| 1 | From Fuschia City, make your way south and use Surf. Then, head further south, then west upon reaching Route 20. You will reach the Seafoam Islands and gain access to the left entrance. |
|---|---|
| 2 | From the entrance, head north and climb down the ladder on the elevated platform. Make sure to pick up the Ice Heal near the ladder. Alternatively, you can opt to push the two extra boulders in this area into the nearest holes to use them in the succeeding floors, but they are unnecessary for the actual puzzle. The extra ladder in this area leads to an isolated area downstairs with a hole and the boulder if you pushed it through the hole. |
| 3 | From the ladder, go east and head down the first ladder you encounter. This ladder is found directly north-west below the elevated platform. A Revive can be found on the platform east of the ladder you descended to. If you pushed the boulder in the floor above, you can push it into another hole in the northern area. |
| 4 | Upon reaching the lower floor, head south and use another ladder going down. Extras: There is a Big Pearl you can get by heading southeast and a Water Stone if you go up the stairs nearby. |
| 5 | Next, head south and push two boulders using Strength into the holes. Then, go north of the cave and make your way down the last ladder. |
| 6 | In the lowest floor, use Surf and head up to find Articuno isolated on a platform. Make sure to avoid killing it and stock up on Ultra Balls to capture it. If you defeat it here, you can't encounter it again! Extras: There is an Ultra Ball in the cave you can get by walking south. If you head northeast, there are a couple of ladders you can climb upwards to find the boulder you previously pushed into the holes. |
| 7 | If you pushed the two extra boulders in the series of holes, you can unlock the Seafoam Islands' right entrance, which is the one accessible by Cinnabar Island. |
