The EXP Share is a great way to increase the overall EXP your team gains. The Pokemon holding it receives a portion of the EXP from combat even without participating, allowing them to passively gain levels.
While this does not increase the EXP gained from combat, it allows weaker Pokemon to catch up while your stronger team members carry the fighting.
Rare Candies are another item that helps your team gain EXP, as it instantly provides a level to the Pokemon you use it on.
It's better to use this on higher-level Pokemon as they need more EXP to level-up, and the Rare Candy gets more value the more EXP the Pokemon needs to level.
Trainer Battles are a good way to get EXP, and you can farm these battles using the VS Seeker. This item charges every 100 steps, and will allow you to rematch Trainers in its range once activated.
The VS Seeker is obtained from a girl in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center, and displays an Exclamation Point (!) over Trainers who are available for a rematch.
You can also opt to farm random encounters using moves that are super-effective to speed-up the process. Do note that this will contribute to a Pokemon's EVs if you haven't maxed those out prior to farming.
Lastly, a Lucky Egg will directly boost the EXP Gain of the Pokemon holding it. However, finding one is difficult as it is only acquired from a Chansey in the Safari Zone.
Both Chansey's spawn rate and chance to be holding the item are quite low, so it can take a very long time to get this item. As such, try other methods first unless you manage to get one by chance.
In the Early Game, it is recommended for players to farm in areas close to Pokemon Centers, as their team may not be strong enough to go on continuous fights yet.
Suggested areas are Routes 2 and 22 due to proximity to Viridian Town, Route 3 or in Mt. Moon as there is a nearby Pokemon Center, or Route 9 just outside the Rock Tunnel, near the Pokemon Center.
Once you've progressed enough into the game, the VS Seeker becomes available via a girl in the Vermillion City Pokemon Center. This allows you to rematch Trainers, who are better sources of EXP than wild Pokemon.
Good spots to re-challenge are where you can see multiple Trainers on-screen, as a single use of the VS Seeker will enable rematches with all of them. Routes 8, 11, 18, and Cycling Road are great spots for finding multiple Trainers.
You can also opt to farm encounters on Routes 15 and 18, as the wild Pokemon in these areas are of a higher level than previous Routes.
The VS Seeker remains a great tool for farming late-game. Once you have access to One Island, you can challenge a group of Black Belts near Ember Spa for good EXP.
Progressing further, you will also be able to farm on Victory Road, where the wild encounters are good for farming EXP.
