Charizard
|
Charizard is a strong Special Attacker in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen with its high base stats. Furthermore, Charizard gains access to strong Fire and Dragon moves, both of which are Special moves.
Charizard can be a Physical Attacker with its Flying moves, but its synergy with Fire being Special together with STAB is just better in terms of damage.
| Nature | Increased Stat | Decreased Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Modest | Sp. Attack | Attack |
| Timid | Speed | Attack |
To boost Charizard's capabilities, get Modest for the extra stats, while reducing its Atk prowess slightly. As a secondary option, Timid is a considerable nature to have on Charizard, as more Spd ensures it moves first in combat.
Is There a Physical and Special Attack Split?
| Nature | Increased Stat | Decreased Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Mild | Sp. Attack | Defense |
If you prefer to increase Charmander's Sp. Atk without affecting its Atk stat, choose Mild instead. This does lessen its Defense quite a bit, making it take fewer hits. However, this is a considerable choice for players, as Charizard benefits from Flying attacks, which are considered Physical moves.
Venusaur
|
Despite being a Grass/Poison-type Pokemon, Venusaur mainly benefits from being a Sp. Attacker due to the lack of Poison-type moves it can learn in the game. Sludge Bomb is a TM only received in the post-game, making the viability of a Physical Attacker Venusaur too late into the game.
| Nature | Increased Stat | Decreased Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Modest | Sp. Attack | Attack |
Modest is the best option to have for Venusaur to ensure it bursts down enemies in battle. You don't have to consider much about Spd, as Bulbasaur is slow to begin with but is built for taking damage.
| Nature | Increased Stat | Decreased Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Defense | Attack |
| Calm | Sp. Defense | Attack |
If you want to build on Venusaur's role as a tank, aim to get Bold or Calm instead. You gain either more Defense or Special Defense stats by losing out on Attack, which it won't use much anyway.
Blastoise
|
Blastoise's base stats focus more on its defenses rather than its damage. As such, you can either increase its tankiness or prioritize one of its damage stats. Blastoise has access to both strong Special and Physical moves, although it benefits more from the STAB received from using Water moves.
| Nature | Increased Stat | Decreased Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Defense | Attack |
| Calm | Sp. Defense | Attack |
For Blastoise, you'd want to prioritize getting either Bold or Calm for its nature to boost its overall tankiness. It does reduce your Atk. slightly, but more than makes up for it by letting it soak more damage in battle.
| Nature | Increased Stat | Decreased Stat |
|---|---|---|
| Modest | Sp. Attack | Attack |
To increase Blastoise's Special Attack moves, go for a Modest nature for Squirtle. Once it's leveled, Blastoise has a lot of good Special moves, given it gains access to Hydro Pump, Surf, and Ice Beam.
| Example Nature | Stat Changes |
|---|---|
| Modest | + Sp. Atk. - Atk. |
Natures affect your Pokemon's stats significantly. They gain more stats into one attribute, in exchange for reducing another attribute's stat.
In general, you mostly want to choose Pokemon with Natures that increase either damage or tankiness. Physical Attackers want Atk. and Spd., while Special Attackers want Sp. Atk and Spd. If a Pokemon is built for being a tank, focus on Def. or Sp. Def.
Nature Chart and How to Check Natures
Changing a starter's nature must be done at the start of the game during starter selection. After you choose your starter, a random nature will be generated. If you prefer a different nature, simply do a soft reset by pressing ABXY simultaneously.
Make sure to save in front of your preferred starter's Poke Ball to speed up the process!

Once you choose a starter, there is no way to change the nature of your Pokemon. There is no existing item or feature in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen that allows you to switch Pokemon Natures.
