The main character's canonical name is widely known to be Red or Leaf in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (FRLG). See the reasoning behind the names and who they are here!
List of Contents

The Male Protagonist is canonically named Red, as it ties to the original Gen I games, Pokémon Red and Green. It is commonly accepted that the Male MC is Red, with his iconic cap being the same color.
Although Ash and Red have significant similarities with one another, they are not known to be the same person. Rather, Ash is shown to take inspiration from the original male main character, Red!

The Female Protagonist in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen is canonically named Leaf with the release of the remakes. She is named in the same manner as Red, taking Leaf from LeafGreen.
It is also likely that the name was changed to avoid confusion from the differences in names for both the Japanese and International versions.
| JP Release (1996) | EN Release (1998) | |
|---|---|---|
| Rival | Green | Blue |
| Female MC | Blue | Green |
In the original Japanese releases for the Gen I games, Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue, the female MC was associated with Blue, while both the male MC and the rival were named Red and Green, respectively.
With the game releasing in the Western market, however, Pokemon Red and Blue came out in 1998, skipping Pokemon Green entirely. The Western adaptation then swapped the names for both the rival and the female MC, making the official rival name, Blue, and the Female MC, Green.
