To quickly hatch eggs from Pokemon breeding, you can cycle back and forth on a long straight path in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (FRLG). Learn how to start breeding Pokemon, how to hatch eggs fast, and what determines the Pokemon's compatibility here!
To hatch an egg, the player will need to take a number of steps. The number of steps required is based on the parents' egg groups.
The steps can be done while cycling, so it's recommended to find a long straight path where you can cycle back and forth.

If you are willing to leave your console unattended, you can go to the Team Rocket Hideout in the Celadon City Game Corner and set up your controller so your character keeps running into an arrow spin tile, effectively creating a loop.
| Pokemon Breeding Steps |
|---|
| 1.) Head to the Pokemon Day Care in Four Island |
| 2.) Leave the Parent Pokemon |
| 3.) Receive an egg |
| 4.) Hatch the egg |
| Optional Steps |
To begin the breeding process, you will need to head to a Pokemon Day Care. Head to Four Island's Pokemon Day Care, which is accessible after receiving the Rainbow Pass.
The Pokemon Day Care in Route 5 does not accept more than one Pokemon at a time, making breeding impossible until you can access the Day Care in Four Island.
Talk to the Day Care NPC and turn in the two Pokemon that you want to breed together.
| Parent | Held Item | Baby |
|---|---|---|
Marill
Azumarill
|
Sea Incense |
Azurill
|
Wobbuffet
|
Lax Incense |
Wynaut
|
Azurill and Wynaut are special Pokemon that can only be obtained through breeding. The parent Pokemon will need to hold a specific incense to get them.
Marill or Azumarill will need to hold a Sea Incense while Wobbuffet will need to hold a Lax Incense.
After taking a number of steps, the Pokemon will eventually breed, and the old man will give you the resulting egg. The number of steps depends on the Pokemon's compatibility; Pokemon with high compatibility require fewer steps while those with low compatibility require more steps to produce an egg.
Talk to the old man outside the Pokemon Day Care to check the Pokemon's compatibility. His response will depend on the Pokemon's compatibility.
| Compatibility | Dialogue |
|---|---|
| Very Compatible | "The two seem to get along very well!" |
| Compatible | "The two seem to get along." |
| Slightly Compatible | "The two don't really seem to like each other very much." |
| Not Compatible | "The two prefer to play with other Pokemon more than with each other." |
To hatch an egg, you will need to take a number of steps again. The number of steps required depends on the baby Pokemon and can be influenced by its egg group.
Unfortunately, the Flame Body and Magma Armor abilities do not influence the number of steps needed in FireRed and LeafGreen.

All Pokemon belong to an egg group, with some belonging to two, and the parent Pokemon must have at least one egg group in common to be compatible enough to breed.
Some Pokemon are unable to breed and thus belong to the No Eggs Discovered egg group. Baby Pokemon like Azurill and Wynaut belong to this egg group.
The parent Pokemon must be a male and a female to be compatible. However, some Pokemon like Staryu and Voltorb are genderless and cannot breed unless it's with a Ditto.
Ditto can breed with almost every Pokemon, except for those that belong in the No Eggs Discovered Group and another Ditto.
If you want to breed several unique Pokemon, we highly recommend getting a Ditto first so you don't have to look for compatible Pokemon.
