Onix
(Lvl. 14) |

・Rock Head ・Sturdy ・Weak Armor |

Brock’s Rock-type Pokemon are slow but tough. Water or Grass moves will tear through his defenses easily, so bring a starter like Squirtle or Bulbasaur, or train a Grass-type early to make this gym a breeze. Being a few levels above his team helps a ton as well
| Boulder Badge | TM39 |
The Boulder Badge not only shows you’ve conquered Pewter Gym, it also lets you use Flash outside of battle to brighten dark caves, essential for areas like Rock Tunnel
| Pokemon | Type | Abilities | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|
Staryu
(Lvl. 18) |

・Illuminate ・Natural Cure ・Analytic |
|
Starmie
(Lvl. 21) |

・Illuminate ・Natural Cure ・Analytic |
Misty’s Water-types hit hard but have a big weakness to Electric and Grass moves. Even if you didn’t pick Bulbasaur, you can catch an Oddish, Bellsprout, or Pikachu nearby to counter her team and make sure to keep your levels slightly above hers to avoid surprise losses.
| Cascade Badge | TM03 |
Defeating Misty earns the Cascade Badge, which allows the use of Cut in the overworld, letting you clear small trees that block your path and explore new areas.
| Pokemon | Type | Abilities | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|
Voltorb
(Lvl. 21) |
|
・Soundproof ・Static ・Aftermath |
|
Pikachu
(Lvl. 18) |
|
・Static ・Lightning Rod |
|
Raichu
(Lvl. 24) |
|
・Static ・Lightning Rod |
Lt. Surge specializes in Electric Pokemon that are vulnerable to Ground moves. A solid Ground-type will make short work of his Voltorb, Pikachu, and Raichu.
Make sure your team is leveled enough to survive his fast-hitting Electric attacks.
| Thunder Badge | TM34 |
The Thunder Badge lets you use Fly outside of battle, giving you fast travel between locations you’ve already visited, navigating Kanto more easily!
| Pokemon | Type | Abilities | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|
Victreebel
(Lvl. 29) |
|
・Chlorophyll ・Gluttony |
・Acid
|
Tangela
(Lvl. 24) |
|
・Chlorophyll ・Leaf Guard ・Regenerator |
|
Vileplume
(Lvl. 29) |
|
・Chlorophyll ・Effect Spore |
・Acid
|
Erika’s Grass-types are fragile against Fire and Flying moves. If you chose Charmander as your starter, you can use this for battle, otherwise, train a Flying-type or Fire-type to handle her Tangela, Vileplume, and Victreebel.
| Rainbow Badge | TM19 |
Earning the Rainbow Badge enables Strength in the overworld, allowing you to move large boulders that block certain paths and reach important items.
| Pokemon | Type | Abilities | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|
Koffing
(Lvl. 37) |
|
・Levitate ・Neutralizing Gas ・Stench |

|
Weezing
(Lvl. 43) |
|
・Levitate ・Neutralizing Gas ・Stench |
Koga’s Poison-types can be tricky, especially since many have Levitate and avoid Ground moves. Psychic attacks work well, and having your Pokémon a few levels higher than his team ensures you can weather status effects like Toxic and Minimize.
| Soul Badge | TM06 |
The Soul Badge grants access to Surf outside of battle, letting you traverse water routes and uncover new locations before Victory Road
| Pokemon | Type | Abilities | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|
Kadabra

・Synchronize ・Inner Focus ・Magic Guard |
|

|
・Shield Dust ・Tinted Lens ・Wonder Skin |
・Gust
|
Alakazam
(Lvl. 43) |
|
・Synchronize ・Inner Focus ・Magic Guard |
Sabrina’s Psychic Pokémon are frail against Ghost and Dark moves. Fire-types also work on her Venomoth. Keep your team leveled slightly above hers to reduce the chance of her Psychic attacks sweeping your team.
| Marsh Badge | TM04 |
With the Marsh Badge, you can use Rock Smash in the field, smashing cracked boulders that block access to optional areas and items.
| Pokemon | Type | Abilities | Moves |
|---|---|---|---|

Blaine’s Fire-types are weak to Water, Rock, and Ground moves. Squirtle or any strong Water-type makes this fight easy. Make sure your levels are a few points higher to survive his Fire Blast and other hot attacks.
| Volcano Badge | TM38 |
The Volcano Badge unlocks Waterfall as a field move, letting you scale waterfalls.

Giovanni’s Ground-types take big hits from Water, Grass, and Ice moves. Surf, Razor Leaf, or Ice Beam will hit hard.
Leveling up above his strongest Pokémon ensures you can take out his team without being punished by his Earthquake or Rock attacks.
How to Beat Giovanni: Viridian City Gym Guide
| Earth Badge | TM26 |
The Earth Badge ensures all your Pokémon will obey you at any level, a key perk before tackling the Pokemon League. He also rewards you with TM26 to teach a powerful Ground‑type move.
Unlike in newer Pokémon games, you cannot rematch Gym Leaders in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. Once you defeat a Gym Leader and obtain their badge, they cannot be challenged again.
