Brock’s Rock-type Pokemon are slow but tough. Water or Grass moves will tear through his defenses easily, so bring a starter like Squirtle or Bulbasaur, or train a Grass-type early to make this gym a breeze. Being a few levels above his team helps a ton as well!
| Boulder Badge | TM39 |
| Other Upgrades: ・ Increased Pokemon Attack ・Allows Flash Use |
|
The Boulder Badge not only shows you’ve conquered Pewter Gym, it also lets you use Flash outside of battle to brighten dark caves, essential for areas like Rock Tunnel.

Misty’s Water-types hit hard but have a are weak against Grass and Electric-types. Pokemon such as Bulbasaur, Oddish, Bellsprout, or Pikachu can counter her team.
| Cascade Badge | TM03 |
| Other Upgrades: ・Pokemon Level 30 and below will obey ・Allows Cut Use |
|
Defeating Misty earns the Cascade Badge, which allows the use of Cut in the overworld, letting you clear small trees that block your path and explore new areas.

Lt. Surge specializes in Electric Pokemon that are vulnerable to Ground moves. A solid Ground-type will make short work of his Voltorb, Pikachu, and Raichu.
Make sure your team is leveled enough to survive his fast-hitting Electric attacks.
| Thunder Badge | TM34 |
| Other Upgrades: ・Increased Pokemon Speed ・Allows Fly Use |
|
The Thunder Badge lets you use Fly outside of battle, giving you fast travel between locations you’ve already visited, navigating Kanto more easily!

Erika’s Grass-types are fragile against Fire and Flying moves. If you chose Charmander as your starter, you can use this for battle, otherwise, train a Flying-type or Fire-type to handle her Tangela, Vileplume, and Victreebel.
| Rainbow Badge | TM19 |
| Other Upgrades: ・Pokemon Level 50 and below will obey ・Allows Strength Use |
|
Earning the Rainbow Badge enables Strength in the overworld, allowing you to move large boulders that block certain paths and reach important items.

Koga’s Poison-types can be tricky, especially since many have Levitate and avoid Ground moves. Psychic attacks work well, and having your Pokémon a few levels higher than his team ensures you can weather status effects like Toxic and Minimize.
| Soul Badge | TM06 |
| Other Upgrades: ・Increased Pokemon Defense ・Allows Surf use |
|
The Soul Badge grants access to Surf outside of battle, letting you traverse water routes and uncover new locations before Victory Road.
| Pokemon | Type | Abilities | Moves |

Sabrina’s Psychic Pokemon are frail against Ghost and Dark moves. Fire-types also work on her Venomoth. Keep your team leveled slightly above hers to reduce the chance of her Psychic attacks sweeping your team.
| Marsh Badge | TM04 |
| Other Upgrades: ・Pokemon Level 70 and below will obey ・Allows Rock Smash use |
|
With the Marsh Badge, you can use Rock Smash in the field, smashing cracked boulders that block access to optional areas and items.

Blaine’s Fire-types are weak to Water, Rock, and Ground moves. Squirtle or any strong Water-type makes this fight easy. Make sure your levels are a few points higher to survive his Fire Blast and other Fire attacks.
| Volcano Badge | TM38 |
| Other Upgrades: ・Increased Pokemon SP ATK and SP Def ・Allows Waterfall use |
|
The Volcano Badge unlocks Waterfall as a field move, letting you scale waterfalls. Your Pokemon's Special Stats will also increase with this badge as well.

Giovanni’s Ground-types take big hits from Water and Grass moves, but be careful of Giovanni's powerful Ground-based attacks such as Earthquake, especially if you don't have any Flying-types on your team.
Leveling up above his strongest Pokémon ensures you can take out his team without being punished by his Earthquake or Rock attacks.
| Earth Badge | TM26 |
| Other Upgrades: ・Pokemon Level 100 and below will obey |
|
The Earth Badge ensures all your Pokémon will obey you at any level, a key perk before tackling the Pokemon League. He also rewards you with TM26 Earthquake to teach a powerful Ground‑type move.

Unlike in other Pokémon titles, you cannot rematch Gym Leaders in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. You can only rematch your Rival as the Pokemon Champion once you finish the Sevii Islands miniquest.

Although it is highly recommended to take on gyms in order of their badge numbers, you can actually take on gyms in any order as soon as you unlock Surf.
For example, Blaine can be challenged before Sabrina since you can technically use Surf to access Cinnabar Island from Pallet Town. You can also go straight to Koga and skip Erika, since you only need the PokeFlute to access Fuchsia City.
Note that as you take on further gym leaders, their levels increase so you may have a hard time defeating them. If you're a veteran player, though, you may take this as a challenge!
Remember that defeating gym leaders rewards you with badges that enable two things: use of a specific HM and increase in the level threshold of Pokemon that will listen to you. Skipping gym leaders would cause some HMs to not function, or Pokemon of a higher level to ignore your commands.
The game is mostly designed to take on the gym leaders in order of their badge numbers, so take extra care when challenging them randomly. Beware of these disadvantages as you take on the gym leaders of Kanto.
