You can break rocks by using Rock Smash and other obstacles with their respective HMs in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (FRLG). Learn how to break rocks and how to remove other obstacles, such as small trees and boulders, here!

How to Remove Obstacles

Use an HM Move on the Obstacle

To remove an obstacle, you will need to interact with it and use the corresponding Hidden Move to remove it. You will need a Pokemon that knows the HM in your current party for the prompt to appear.

Pokemon FRLG - Farfetch Farfetch'd Pokemon FRLG - Krabby Krabby Pokemon FRLG - Gyarados Gyarados

We recommend having a dedicated Pokemon for HM moves since they cannot be forgotten unless you visit the Move Deleter in Fuchsia City.

Farfetch'd is great since it can be obtained early in Vermilion City and learns both Cut and Fly. Krabby is a great early all-rounder as it can learn Cut, Rock Smash, Strength, and Surf. Gyarados can cover Waterfall, Surf, Strength, and Rock Smash later on if you want to replace Krabby with another Water-type Pokemon that can learn both Surf and Waterfall.
