Once you're able to choose a starter, save the game in front of the table with the Poké Balls. This lets you make a save file you can quickly return to in case your chosen Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur is not shiny.
After saving, select the starter of your choice and check to see if it's a shiny Pokemon. There is no indicator in the Team menu, so you will have to check in the Pokemon Summary screen directly if your starter has a different color or not.

If your starter isn't shiny, simply restart the game by pressing ABXY on your Nintendo Switch and re-open your save file. This is called a soft reset, and it might take multiple attempts for you to get a shiny. Once you do, congrats on getting your extremely rare starter!
Do note that each reset also affects other stats of your Pokémon, including EVs, Gender, and Traits!
It's entirely possible to get shiny starters in Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green, as they are not shiny-locked. The odds for getting one is extremely low, however, as it might take you a significant number of resets before seeing it in your playthrough!
| Estimated Calculation | 1 in 8,192 |
|---|
The odds for getting a Shiny Starter are 1 in 8,192 based on game data and statistics. As such, it is more than likely for you to reset the game a significant number of times before seeing a Shiny Starter.
Shiny Starters have unique color schemes from the standard Pokemon variant, often being lighter and less saturated. This, however, varies per Pokemon, as some even have distinctly different hues!
Shinies have a special indicator in the Pokedex compared to standard Pokemon you encounter. If you happened to get a Shiny Pokemon, a star symbol can be seen!
