EV Training, also known as effort value training, requires defeating certain Pokemon to efficiently raise the stats you want in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (FRLG). Learn what EVs are, how to EV train fast, and where the best EV training spots are here!
Effort Values, or more commonly known as EVs, are hidden stats that add to the Pokemon's base stats. EVs can be increased by defeating other Pokemon, and the stat that the EV increases depends on which Pokemon was defeated. Vitamins, such as Protein and Calcium, can also increase your Pokemon's EVs.
A maximum of 510 EVs can be acquired per Pokemon. However, a Pokemon can only have 255 EVs per stat, making it impossible to pour all 510 EVs into a single stat.
It takes 4 EVs to raise a stat by 1 point, so a stat can technically be raised by 63 points through EVs. Technically, you can increase a stat by 63 points with 252 EVs only, so you are free to allocate the extra 3 EVs into another stat instead.
| Vitamin | EV Stat |
|---|---|
| HP Up | HP |
| Protein | Attack |
| Iron | Defense |
| Calcium | Sp. Atk |
| Zinc | Sp. Def |
| Carbos | Speed |
Before grinding Pokemon battles to raise your EVs, use Vitamins to raise your EVs first. However, you can't raise EVs all the way with Vitamins because they can only raise a maximum of 100 EVs. Each Vitamin gives 10 EVs, so you will need 10 of the Vitamin to hit its limit.
Vitamins can be purchased from the Department Store in Celadon City, but can be quite costly due to each Vitamin costing 9,800. We recommend farming Nuggets using the Nugget Bridge Glitch if you haven't done that fight yet, or using the VS Seeker to rematch other trainers for money.
Money Farming Guide (Nugget Bridge Glitch)
Pokemon that receive EXP in the fight will gain EVs based on the defeated Pokemon. Each Pokemon has a fixed EV yield, with some Pokemon giving EVs for multiple stats and some Pokemon giving EVs for one stat only.
With that in mind, it's best to plan out which stat you want to raise and look for areas where you can fight Pokemon with the corresponding EVs.
Macho Brace is a held item that doubles the amount of EVs gained by the Pokemon holding it, but also lowers its speed by half during combat. We greatly recommend getting this item first before EV farming because it essentially halves the grind needed.
EXP Share is another held item that we recommend getting before starting the grindy EV farm. The Pokemon holding the EXP Share in your party will also receive the EVs from the defeated Pokemon. This means you can essentially EV train two Pokemon at once.
Unfortunately, the bonus EVs gained from Macho Brace do not transfer over to the Pokemon holding the EXP Share. For example, defeating a Pikachu will normally yield 2 Speed EVs. The Pokemon holding the Macho Brace will get 4 Speed EVs, but the Pokemon holding the EXP Share will only receive 2 Speed EVs.
EXP Share Location and How to Get
Long-term Pokemon fans might be familiar with Pokerus, a rare Pokemon virus that increases the amount of EVs gained per battle, which can be stacked with the Macho Brace. Unfortunately, Pokerus is not in FireRed and LeafGreen despite being present in other Gen 3 games.
