This is a walkthrough guide for getting the 1st Gym Badge in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (FRLG). See a step-by-step guide on how to get to Pewter City, beat the 1st Gym and get the Boulder Badge, as well as important items and Pokemon to get here.

| 2 | ![]() Leave your house and try to find Prof. Oak by trying to go to Route 1. Prof. Oak will appear to stop you from going to Route 1 without a Pokemon. |

| 4 | ![]() As you turn to leave the lab, your Rival will stop you to have your first Rival battle. Regardless of whether you win or lose, you can exit the lab and out of Pallet Town then head to Route 1. |
| 1 | ![]() Head to Route 1 and explore the Tall Grass to encounter Pokemon. Battle them to gain experience, or capture them by lowering their health ever so slightly and throwing a Poke Ball. |

| 2 | ![]() Since your Rival will not give you a Town Map, head out and enter the house north of the lab. Talk to your Rival's sister, Daisy, to obtain the Town Map. |

| 1 | ![]() After defeating your Rival in Route 22, head back to Viridian City and head north to see the Old Man blocking this area earlier. |

| 2 | ![]() The old man finally had his coffee and takes a notice on your Pokedex. He will then teach you how to catch Pokemon before finally going to Route 2. He will give you a Key Item, the Teachy TV, which you can use to review basic game mechanics by going to your backpack and selecting it from the Key Items menu. |
| 3 | ![]() Continue north until you reach the gate to Viridian Forest. We advise healing your Pokemon at the Pokemon Center if you were training them earlier before proceeding here. |
| 1 | ![]() Virdian Forest features several Bug Trainers with Bug-type Pokemon across the entire path and several patches of Tall Grass with new Pokemon unique in the area. You can level up your Pokemon here via Trainer or Wild Battles and capture new ones along the way to familiarize yourself even more with the gameplay. |

| 2 | ![]() To exit Viridian Forest, head east, then turn north, following the Forest's main route along the way. Head westward to reach the northern terminus of the Forest to escape and reach the next city. |
| 1 | ![]() Once outside the terminus gate of Viridian Forest, you will reach Pewter City, home to Gym Leader Brock, whom you must defeat to proceed. Explore the city to discover places of interest, such as the Pokemon Museum of Science, which will be teach you about Pokemon Fossils found later. |

After defeating Brock, you will receive the Boulder Badge, which allows your Pokemon to use the move Flash. Additionally, he will also reward you with TM39 (Rock Tomb).

As you head off east of Pewter City to Route 3, Prof. Oak's Aide will stop you momentarily. He hands you the Running Shoes item, with a letter from your Mom attached to it.
