Moves can deal varying amounts of damage against certain Pokemon types. A move type that's super effective against a Pokemon type will deal 2x more damage. Move types that neither have an advantage nor disadvantage will output 1x damage only.
In instances where a move type is not very effective against a Pokemon type, that move's damage will be reduced by half instead. There are even Pokemon types that are immune to certain move types, which will cancel out damage entirely.
| Battle Text | Damage Calculation |
|---|---|
| "It doesn't affect (Pokemon name)..." | 0x |
| "It's not very effective..." | 0.25x |
| 0.5x | |
| No particular battle text shown for regular damage moves | 1.0x |
| "It's super effective!" | 2.0x |
| 4.0x |
There are four main types of damage multipliers based on the Pokemon Type Matchup: super effective, effective (regular damage), not very effective, and no effect (immune). 0.5x and 4x damage multipliers usually come from dual type Pokemon matchups.
You can determine the damage multiplier that's been applied to your Pokemon's move based on the battle text that appears. The table shows the battle text that corresponds to each multiplier.
| Type 1 | Type 2 | Damage Output |
|---|---|---|
| Weak | Weak | 4x |
| Weak | Resistant | 1x |
| Resistant | Resistant | 0.25x |
| Immune | Weak or Resistant | 0x |
| Weak or Resistant | Immune | 0x |
Some Pokemon have a second type, which can make them extra vulnerable to moves that are super effective against both of their types. In this case, a super effective move could deal 4x damage to the defending Pokemon.
On the other hand, the damage output would be decreased if one of the Pokemon's two types is resistant to the attacking Pokemon's move.
