One way to increase a Pokemon's friendship is by leveling it up. Gain EXP by winning battles with the Pokemon or by using Rare Candies.
EXP Farming Guide: How to Level Up Fast

Another way to increase a Pokemon's friendship is by including it in important battles. Fighting against gym leaders, the Elite Four, and the Champion can actually increase the Pokemon's friendship. However, regular Pokemon battles do not affect friendship.
Don't let your Pokemon faint in battle. If your Pokemon faints from losing a battle, the friendship decreases by a certain amount depending on the difference in levels between the opposing Pokemon.
Using bitter herbal medicines like a Revival Herb or Energy Root can decrease the friendship by an alarming amount.

Having the Pokemon in your active party will help increase its friendship. For every 128 steps, there is a chance that your entire party gains a friendship point.

In Pokemon FRLG, your Rival's sister, Daisy Oak, can groom your Pokemon to increase its happiness. She is also the Happiness Checker and gives notes on how much your Pokemon likes you. You can find Daisy in Pallet Town east of your house.
Giving Pokemon Vitamins (Protein, HP Up, Carbos, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, PP Up) increases your Pokemon's stats. Vitamins keep a Pokemon healthy, and thus increase its happiness as well.
List of All Stat-Boosting Items
An important item for friendship is the Soothe Bell, which increases how much friendship a Pokemon gains by 1. Let your Pokemon hold the item to gain its effects.
Once you finish the game and reach the post-game content, you can get Luxury Balls at Five Island, which helps the Pokemon caught gain friendship quickly. You can get Luxury Balls at Resort Gorgeous from Selphy.
