Getting the 4th Gym Badge Walkthrough

Jump to a Section
Rock Tunnel Lavender Town
Route 8 Celadon City
Celadon City Gym -

Rock Tunnel

1
After the 4th gym, you should head to Route 10, farther east of Route 9 that directly connects to Cerulean City to the east. Route 10 will only have the Rock Tunnel at this point, so go there. Before heading out, we suggest visiting the nearby Pokemon Center to heal up any Pokemon, as well as make sure to have a Pokemon that can learn HM Flash.

We advise using what is commonly known as an HM Pokemon, a Pokemon that you will only know HM Moves for adventuring.
2
Enter Rock Tunnel directly from a cave entrance to the left of the Pokemon Center. You will be greeted with darkness upon entering, so go to your Pokemon List and find the Pokemon that have learned HM Flash, then use it to light up the entire area ahead.
3
Explore Rock Tunnel to find its exit point and reach the next area. The exit is to the south and will be accessible by traversing back and forth between the basement and the ground floor. It will be straightforward, and you'll be able to go out if you just climb/descend ladders accessible to you. We advise exploring the entire cave and fighting the trainers on your first go here to gain some experience and level your Pokemon.

Before exiting, head northeast to get a Pearl that you can sell for money. We also highly suggest using Repels here if you do not want to be harassed by constant Zubat or Geodude encounters.
*
Look for an NPC that has a yellow hat on the basement floor, who will teach a viable Pokemon Rock Slide. He will only do this once, so make sure you teach it to a Pokemon that you will use for a long time! If you haven't decided yet, you can always come back later!

After going down the first ladder, head extremely west to get a Revive.

Lavender Town

1
Head outside and go south to reach Lavender Town. Hit the Pokemon Center and Pokemon Store if you need to heal your Pokemon or buy items.
2
You can explore the houses and talk to several people in the town to learn more about it's history. The Name Rater is located here in a house to the south, as well as Mr. Fuji's Pokemon House right below the Pokemon Center.
3
Head to the Pokemon Tower and find your Rival on the 2nd floor to battle him. Avoid going to the other floors for now as you won't be able to make much progress.
*
Head to the gatehouse south of Lavender Town past the wooden bridges in Route 12, and climb up to get TM27 Return.

Route 8

1
Head left from Lavender Town to Reach Route 8 to continue your progress. This path is mostly linear as you will only continue left until you reach the route's endpoint.

Fight all the trainers here to get EXP, as you prepare to face the gym leader of Celadon City.
2 Go to the door near a Super Nerd Trainer to enter the Underground Tunnel then exit the long tunnel by reaching the other side, allowing you to reach Route 7.

Head north of Route 7 to find some paved road, then follow it to reach the next area.

Celadon City

1
You will reach Celadon City shortly, where you can explore most of the houses and other points of interest in the area. We advise heading to Celadon Department Store in the center of the city to buy TMs and items.

When you are done exploring, hit the Celadon Game Corner next, as your next objective will be there.
2
Go to Celadon Game Corner and look for the Team Rocket Grunt guarding a poster. Fight him and interact with the Poster to activate the hidden switch. The switch opens up a secret entrance to the right of the poster.
3
Sweep all Team Rocket grunts and collect items as you go into the Hideout. Follow the position of the Grunts you defeated to get through the different areas until your reach the Team Rocket boss, Giovanni.
4
Defeat Giovanni's Pokemon to finish this section, and you can either exit the way you came, or use an Escape Rope to reach the surface again. Don't forget to collect the Silph Scope after the fight!

Celadon City Gym

1 After defeating Giovanni, you can continue to level up your Pokemon or explore Celadon City if you haven't done so yet. Make sure your Pokemon are healed too before proceeding.
2 Go to the southern area of Celadon City and use HM Cut to break the tree blocking the rightmost path near some fences. Continue cutting trees along the southern path to reach Celadon City Gym.
3 Enter Celadon City Gym, a Grass-Type specialty Gym and defeat the trainers there. We advise carrying at least one or two Fire-type Pokemon that has Fire moves to make the fight easier.
4 Continue defeating the different Trainers inside the Gym until you face Erika, the Gym Leader, herself. She will be using Grass-types primarily against you so it is adviseable to have Fire, Flying, or Bug Pokemon in this fight.

Finish the duel to claim your Fourth badge and get TM19 Giga Drain as well as the ability to use Strength outside of battle.
