Koga specializes in Poison-type Pokemon, which are known for inflicting status conditions such as Poison and using evasive tactics like Smokescreen and Minimize. Because of this, battles against Koga can become longer and more difficult if you are unprepared.
It is recommended to bring Pokemon around Level 43 to 46 to keep up with Koga’s team. Strong Psychic-type moves are especially effective in this battle, allowing you to defeat his Poison-types quickly before they can stack status effects.

Koga’s team consists of two Koffing, a Muk, and a Weezing, all of which specialize in poisoning opponents and lowering their accuracy. Several of his Pokemon also carry moves like Self-Destruct and Toxic, making them dangerous if the battle drags on.
Muk can also use Minimize and Acid Armor, which greatly increase its survivability if left unchecked. Because of this, it is best to defeat Koga’s Pokemon quickly using strong Psychic-type attacks before they can set up their defenses.

Since Koga's specialty is Poison, it will be super-effective against Grass-type Pokemon, but weak against Ground-type and Psychic-type. It is highly recommended to use a strong Psychic-type Pokemon with the move Psychic.
Ground-type Pokemon are good but have a disadvantage against Koga since 3 of his Pokemon have Levitate and can't be hit with Ground-type moves like Earthquake. Lastly, have your Pokemon at least three levels higher than Koga's team.
List of All Psychic Type Pokemon

With Poison-type moves inflicting the status condition Poison, it is best to prepare healing items and berries. Have your Pokemon hold a Pecha Berry, or use an Antidote or Full Heal during a turn to deal with the Poison.
| Pokemon | Recommended Moves |
|---|---|
Kadabra
|
・Psychic-type moves deal super effective damage to Poison-types. ・High Speed and Special Attack allow Kadabra to defeat Koga’s team quickly. |
Hypno
|
・Bulkier Psychic-type option that can take hits from Koga’s Pokemon. ・Hypnosis can disable threats like Muk or Weezing. |
Fearow
|
・Strong physical attacker that can deal steady damage to Koga’s team. ・Useful if you lack strong Psychic-type Pokemon. |
※ Move recommendations for solo experience only and may not be reflective of the Pokemon's use in competitive play.
These Pokemon are strong choices against Koga’s Poison-type team due to their ability to deal consistent damage or resist many of his attacks. Psychic-type Pokemon like Kadabra and Hypno are especially effective since Psychic-type moves deal super effective damage against Poison-types.
While Ground-type moves are normally effective against Poison-types, most of Koga’s Pokemon have the Levitate ability, making them immune to Ground-type attacks.
Venusaur
|
Kadabra
|
Hypno
|
Players who started with Bulbasaur will have their Venusaur immune to being poisoned by Koga's team due to its typing. Since Venusaur can comfortably take on Poison-type moves, using Sleep Powder can be beneficial to gain free turns.
For a Psychic-type Pokemon, a Kadabra with Psychic at Lvl. 36 might be your best bet with its high Speed and Sp. Atk stats. The nearest Abra you can catch is on Route 24 or Route 25. A Drowzee in Route 11 is nearer to Fuchsia City. Have Drowzee evolve to Hypno and learn Psychic at Lvl. 35 to deal with Koga's team.
Charizard
|
Kadabra
|
Hypno
|
If you started with Charmander, a Charizard is still strong against Koga with its high offensive stats, especially with Flamethrower in its moveset.
If your Charizard is struggling to survive, then you can swap in a Psychic-type Pokemon like Kadabra or Hypno to deal super-effective damage.
Blastoise
|
Kadabra
|
Hypno
|
If you started with Squirtle, Blastoise can also survive strong moves from Koga due to its defense stats. Blastoise can still deal decent damage with offensive Water-type moves, but it might not be enough to clear Koga's team alone.
Have Blastoise team up with Kadabra and Hypno to cover Koga's weakness and clear out your opponent with ease by using Psychic.
