Agatha's Pokemon Team and Types

Type and Suggested Level

Type Specialty Pokemon FRLG - Ghost Pokemon FRLG - Poison
Rec. Level Lv. 58 ~ Lv. 65

Agatha specializes in Ghost-type Pokemon and Poison-type Pokemon. Ghost is a wildcard-typing in Generation III, mainly known for its inability to fight and immunity to Normal-types, and having peculiar moves such as Shadow Ball, Confuse Ray and Destiny Bond.

Poison is considered to be one of the best typings in the game, due to most of its moves such as Sludge Bomb and Toxic dealing decent damage and applying the Poison status on hit while also giving immunity to the effect if your Pokemon is a Poison-type.

Agatha has Pokemon that combine both Ghost and Poison-types together, allowing for a good defensive and offensive coverage of attacks for both element types. Despite this, most of her Pokemon are Poison-types, and can be neutralized by Ground-types and Psychic-types with minimal impunity.

Dark-types such as Umbreon, if you are able to carry them in FireRed and LeafGreen, can deal with the Ghost-type Gengars effectively as well.

How to Beat Elite Four Agatha

Use Ground and Psychic-type Pokemon

Ground-Type
All of Agatha's Pokemon are part-Poison, which makes Ground-types and Poison-types the best intervetion for her due to Ground's resistance to Poison moves, its ability to deal with Ghost-types neutrally, and Psychic's effectiveness to the latter as well.

We advise getting a Sandslash, Golem or Dugtrio, paired with Kadabra or Hypno to compete against Agatha's Pokemon and cover for the Levitate abilities of Gengar and Haunter.

Be Careful With Psychic-Type Usage

Due to Ghost-types effectiveness to Psychic-types, using them is a double-edged sword and will require you to properly invest in their stats to match or one-hit Ghost types.

Take Out Both Gengars ASAP

Take Out Gengar
Agatha has 2 Gengars, one at Lvl. 54 with Confuse Ray and Toxic, while the other is Lvl. 58 with Hypnosis. These moves can potentially ruin your Pokemon's turn due to the status effects they may apply, so prioritize on taking them out.

It is highly recommended to increase the Speed of your strongest Pokemon to take the first move and defeat them in one hit as soon as possible with Psychic (TM29).

Prepare Status Healing Items

Items
Since Agatha's team will have moves that can inflict Poison, Sleep, Paralysis, or Confusion, it is best to prepare healing items like Full Restores and Full Heals to deal with them.

Use Dark-Types if You Can Carry Them

Due to the unique conditions of Dark Types as FireRed and LeafGreen being part of the original Gen 1 remakes, Dark-types can only be carried in Kanto via other Pokemon games.

Should you be able to carry one, such as Umbreon into your roster, they can be used too against Agatha's team, but this might be a bit of an investment and it might be better to use Dark-type moves instead.

You can bring a full party of six Pokemon into the Elite Four battle, but the team shown here focuses on the best counters for Agatha’s line-up.

The remaining slots can be filled with any other strong Pokemon you’ve trained including your starter, but these three are the core picks that make the fight much more manageable.

When Starting with Bulbasaur

Pokemon FRLG - Venusaur Venusaur Pokemon FRLG - Sandslash Sandslash
Pokemon FRLG - Kadabra Kadabra

If you are facing Agatha with Venusaur it can be bulky enough to tank strong moves from Agatha's team. You may use moves like Sleep Powder to gain a free turn, or forcibly use strong neutral moves to reduce the opponent's HP.

To counter Agatha's Ghost/Poison team, use both Ground-types and Psychic-types, like Sandslash and Kadabra or Hypno to cover for each of Agatha's abilities.

When Starting with Charmander

Pokemon FRLG - Charizard Charizard Pokemon FRLG - Sandslash Sandslash
Pokemon FRLG - Kadabra Kadabra

With Charizard as your starter, it can already deal serious damage with moves like Flamethrower. Pair this with Sandslash for Ground-type coverage and Kadabra or Hypno for Psychic attacks.

Charmander Location, Evolution, and Stats

When Starting with Squirtle

Pokemon FRLG - Blastoise Blastoise Pokemon FRLG - Sandslash Sandslash
Pokemon FRLG - Kadabra Kadabra

Blastoise can be good against Agatha with a Dark-type move like Bite in its moveset, since Dark-type moves are super-effective against Ghost. Pair Blastoise up with Sandslash for Ground-type coverage and Kadabra or Hypno and have them learn Psychic to defeat Agatha's team easily.
