The Pokemon Day Care is a place where trainers drop off their Pokemon to level up and learn moves in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (FRLG). Learn all the Pokemon Day Care locations and how it works, how to do the Day Care EXP exploit, and if you should leave Pokemon in the Day Care in this guide!
List of Contents
| Route 5 Day Care | Can only take one Pokemon for leveling. |
|---|---|
| Four Island Day Care | Allows breeding by taking in two Pokemon. |

The first Pokemon Day Care is located south of Cerulean City. If you use Cut on the small tree or take the fenced path to the side, you will reach the first ledge. Continue to head south by jumping down all 5 ledges to find the Day Care.

The Route 5 Day Care can only take one Pokemon at a time. This makes Pokemon breeding impossible, since two Pokemon are required for breeding.

The next Pokemon Day Care is located at Four Island, which becomes accessible after defeating the Elite Four and obtaining the National Dex. You would also need to secure the Rainbow Pass by giving the Ruby and Sapphire to Celio on One Island.
Unlike the Route 5 Day Care, the Four Island Pokemon Day Care can take 2 Pokemon, allowing you to breed and produce an egg if they meet the necessary criteria.

Once a Pokemon is dropped off at the Day Care, it gains 1 EXP for every step you take in-game. This allows the Pokemon to level up and learn moves.
Additionally, keep in mind that it will not evolve in the Day Care. You would have to withdraw the Pokemon and level it up yourself. It will cost 100 Poke Dollars to withdraw a Pokemon to your party.

The Pokemon Day Care at Four Island allows the player to drop off 2 Pokemon for breeding. To produce an egg, make sure to leave 2 Pokemon that have an Egg Group in common and have opposite genders, or pair one with a Ditto.
Take note that an Egg cycle takes 256 steps, and that you may also use the spinning tiles exploit to reduce its remaining cycles faster.

To maximize the EXP gain of your Pokemon, head to the Team Rocket Hideout (B2F) in Celadon City. From the stairs, head west to the spinning tiles. You can hold your controller in a way that keeps you going in circles, allowing you to gain more steps and EXP faster than normal.

Another great location to maximize the EXP gain is the Underground Path that connects Route 5 to Route 6. From the Day Care on Route 5, head southeast to find the gate to the Underground Path.
Use the bike back and forth on the path to maximize EXP gain.

It is recommended to leave Pokemon at the Day Care early on, especially ones with slower EXP growth like Magikarp. This helps cut down the time you can spend trying to gain EXP from battles.

| Move 3 | Poison Sting | Horn Attack |
| Move 4 | Horn Attack | Helping Hand |
Focus Energy is lost for Helping Hand.
Pokemon can also learn moves when leveling in the Day Care. If the Pokemon's move list is full, the new move will be placed at the bottom, and the move in the top slot will be overwritten.
Once you reach mid-late game, it's not recommended to keep a Pokemon in the Day Care to risk losing a move worth keeping.
Should you leave a Pokemon in the Day Care for too long and a preferred move gets overwritten, you can head to the Move Relearner and add it back to your Pokemon's moveset.
