This is a list of the best teams to beat Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (FRLG). See a list of the best teams with Venusaur, Squirtle, and Charizard, as well as their moves and explanations for why they're used here.
| Pokemon | Moves and Explanation |
|---|---|
Venusaur
|
Bulky starter with good recovery options and strong offensive coverage. |
Nidoking
|
・Surf
Has balanced stats and a ton of coverage options. Can swap out listed moves if you wish, such as Thunderbolt or Ice Beam, but keep Surf for overworld utility. |
Snorlax
|
・Rest
Very bulky Pokemon that hits hard and is difficult to take down. Can swap out Rest and Sleep Talk if you don't need the healing. |
Flareon
|
A Fire Pokemon that also deals with Ghost-types. Can also use Arcanine or Ninetales if you wish. |
Dragonite
|
・Fly
Pseudo-legendary with a ton of coverage options. Helps round out HM coverage, and Fire Punch can be replaced with Ice or Thunder Punch. |
Parasect
|
・Cut
Utility Pokemon that covers the remaining HMs that you need. Also has Spore to help with catching Pokemon. |
Aside from Nidoking and Snorlax, who are some of the strongest non-starters for the main story, Venusaur, Flareon, and Dragonite create a strong core that can cover most other Pokemon, while Parasect provides amazing HM and Spore utility for regular gameplay.
| Pokemon | Moves and Explanation |
|---|---|
Blastoise
|
・Surf
・Bite
Starter with balanced attacking stats and good range of coverage for type advantages. |
Nidoking
|
Has balanced stats and a ton of coverage options. Can swap out listed moves if you wish, but Rock Slide and Ice Beam are generally its best options. |
Snorlax
|
・Rest
Very bulky Pokemon that hits hard and is difficult to take down. Can swap out Rest and Sleep Talk if you don't need the healing. |
Dodrio
|
・Fly
Fast and strong Flying-type for the Fly HM. Tri Attack is useful for random status effects, while Steel Wing provides good coverage. |
Raichu
|
・Dig
Electric-type needed to counter Water Pokemon. Has other decent coverage options, but Quick Attack is used to secure KOs while Dig is solid coverage and also amazing for escaping dungeons. |
Parasect
|
・Cut
Utility Pokemon that covers that remaining HMs that you need. Also has Spore to help with catching Pokemon. |
Aside from Nidoking and Snorlax, who are some of the strongest non-starters for the main story, Blastoise, Dodrio, and Raichu provide a wide range of offensive and HM coverage, while Parasect helps cover the other HMs that are not as useful or strong in battle.
| Pokemon | Moves and Explanation |
|---|---|
Charizard
|
・Fly
Has a good mix of special and physical attacks. Can also learn Fly as utility, removing the need to get other flying-types. |
Nidoking
|
Has balanced stats and a ton of coverage options. Body Slam is also a great option, but feel free to settle for something else such as Megahorn to cover its weakness to Psychic, since Nidoking can only learn that in the late game. |
Snorlax
|
・Rest
Very bulky Pokemon that hits hard and is difficult to take down. Can swap out Rest and Sleep Talk if you don't need the healing. |
Lapras
|
・Surf
A good offensive Pokemon that can cover water-based utility such as Surf and Waterfall. |
Raichu
|
・Dig
Has a good mix of moves to cover most types. Base Pokemon Pikachu can be caught early in the game. Can also use Dig to escape dungeons. |
Parasect
|
・Cut
A full-utility Pokemon that can carry a lot of the missing HMs. Can also use Spore to inflict sleep. |
Aside from Nidoking and Snorlax, who are some of the strongest non-starters for the main story, Lapras and Raichu can fill in the remaining slots on your team, as they not only provide useful HM utility but can also hold their own offensively. Parasect will cover the other missing HM moves as you progress through the game.
