Same-Type Attack Bonus

STAB, short for Same-Type Attack Bonus, is a damage boost on moves used by Pokemon of the same type. The move will deal 1.5x the normal damage of the move.

How to Use STAB Effectively

Attack with Moves of the Same Type

Have your Pokemon learn at least 1 move of the same type to utilize the STAB damage. Dual-type Pokemon will get STAB on both move types.

For example, Gengar is both Ghost/Poison-type. It will benefit from STAB on offensive Ghost-type moves and Poison-type moves.

Avoid Moves with Fixed Damage

Certain moves deal a fixed amount of damage. These moves don't get the damage boost from STAB, regardless of typing. It is best to refrain from using these moves for STAB.

Bide Pokemon FRLG - Physical 1 100 ・Endures attack for 2 turns to retaliate double.
・ User takes hits for 2 rounds, then strikes back.
Counter Pokemon FRLG - Physical 1 100 ・Retaliates any physical hit with double the power.
・ If hit by a physical attack, deals double the damage received.
Dragon Rage Pokemon FRLG - Special 1 100 ・Launches shock waves that always inflict 40 HP damage.
・ Inflicts 40 HP damage.
Endeavor Pokemon FRLG - Physical 1 100 ・Gains power if the user's HP is lower than the foe's HP.
・ Power rises if user's HP are less than opponent's HP.
Mirror Coat Pokemon FRLG - Special 1 100 ・Counters the foe's special attack at double the power.
・ Counters the foe's special attack at double the power.
Night Shade Pokemon FRLG - Physical 1 100 ・Inflicts damage identical to the user's level.
・ Inflicts damage equal to the user's level.
Psywave Pokemon FRLG - Special 1 80 ・Attacks with a psychic wave of varying intensity.
・ Inflicts damage equal to 0.5 to 1.5 x user's level.
Seismic Toss Pokemon FRLG - Physical 1 100 ・Inflicts damage identical to the user's level.
・ Inflicts damage equal to the user's level.
Sonic Boom Pokemon FRLG - Physical 1 90 ・Launches shock waves that always inflict 20 HP damage.
・ Inflicts 20 HP damage.
Super Fang Pokemon FRLG - Physical 1 90 ・Attacks with sharp fangs and cuts half the foe's HP.
・ Cuts half opponent's HP.
