Moves in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are divided by type and category, which determine how damage is calculated in battle. Moves are classified as Physical, Special, or Status, with damage based on the user’s stats and the opponent’s defenses.
Some moves may also have secondary effects, such as inflicting status conditions or raising and lowering stats.

Moves in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are divided into different types and damage is determined by how a move’s type interacts with the opposing Pokemon’s type. Using a move that is super effective against your opponent will deal increased damage, while moves that are not very effective will deal reduced damage.
Choosing moves that target an opponent’s weakness is one of the most important strategies in battle.
In FireRed and LeafGreen, every move falls under one of three categories: Physical, Special, or Status.
Physical moves use the attacker’s Attack stat and the target’s Defense stat when calculating damage while Special moves use the attacker’s Special Attack stat and the target’s Special Defense stat. Status moves do not deal direct damage but instead provide buffs, debuffs, or inflict status conditions.
Unlike newer games, move categories in Generation III are determined by type, not by the individual move. For example, all Fire-type moves are Special, while all Fighting-type moves are Physical.
Certain moves have secondary effects that may activate during battle. These effects can include a chance to cause status conditions, lowering an opponent’s stats, or providing team support like setting up Reflect or Light Screen.
Secondary effects are not guaranteed unless the move specifically states otherwise.

Pokemon naturally learn new moves as they gain experience and level up. When a Pokemon tries to learn a new move while already knowing four moves, you must choose one to forget.
Technical Machines (TMs) allow you to teach specific moves to compatible Pokemon. In FireRed and LeafGreen, TMs can only be used once, so choose carefully before teaching them.
Hidden Machines (HMs) teach moves that can also be used outside of battle, such as Cut, Surf, and Strength. Unlike TMs in this generation, HM moves cannot be forgotten unless you visit the Move Deleter in Fuchsia City.
Egg Moves are special techniques inherited by a hatched Pokemon from its father, allowing it to learn moves it cannot normally learn through leveling up or TMs.
Egg Moves and Breeding become available at the Day Care on Four Island during the post-game.
You can also learn certain special moves through the Move Tutors found across the Sevii Islands. Unlike TMs, these moves are not stored in your Bag, you must speak directly to the NPC to teach them.
If you accidentally delete an important move, you can visit the Move Relearner on Two Island after obtaining the Rainbow Pass, provided you have a TinyMushroom or Big Mushroom.
