Gustave dies at the end of Act 1 in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. After the Lampmaster boss fight, Renoir kills Gustave. This means that you cannot use Gustave during Act 2 anymore!

Verso Replaces Gustave

At the start of Act 2, Verso, a mysterious outsider who keeps watch on the Expedition, joins the party to replace Gustave. Verso's kit revolves around parrying and dodging. The more you parry and dodge, the higher his damage will be due to his Perfection Rank mechanic.

No, Gustave Does Not Come Back in the Regular Playthrough

Gustave and Sophie

Once Gustave dies in Act 1, he will no longer appear throughout the main story all the way until the ending and epilogue.

Can Be Built Further in New Game+

When you can access the New Game Plus mode, you will be brought back to the beginning of the story with your characters and builds intact!

This means that you will be able to use Gustave again, with whatever build you had on him in your previous playthrough.

you might be overly invested in ONE character then. a character intended to be an emotional linchpin. jrpgs are generally sad. why did you expect anything but misery? T_T
