Here is a Combat Guide for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, See combat tips for the Turn-Based Combat in this guide!
List of Contents

During your character's turn, you can choose one of the following actions in the Battle Wheel; Attack, Skill, Items, or Aim.
Selecting Attack will let you select a Target and perform a base attack, which recovers AP, indicated by the blue bar beneath your character's health bar.

Each character can have up to six Skills equipped, and you can use a skill as an action during your turn. Each skill consumes a certain amount of AP, indicated in the upper right corner of the skill description when choosing a skill to use.
Players also have the option to use an item from their inventory during their turn.

There is also the option to use a Free Aim Shot to target flying enemies or aim for an enemy's Weak Point. A Free Aim Shot consumes 1 AP and, when hitting a Weak Point, can deal increased damage.
A Free Aim Shot also counts as an extra move you can do before choosing another action.

Some enemies will have one or more shield icons on their health bar, which prevents them from taking damage. This is separate from the Break bar and must be dispelled using Aim Shots.

When attacking with a skill, there will be a chance to trigger a Quick Time Event, or QTE. Pressing the spacebar on your keyboard or the A button on your controller at the right moment will improve your skill's effect!
When the QTE prompter appears, the button you need to press is indicated, and the marker traveling around the prompter should be within the yellow area to trigger QTE!

When it's an opponent's turn to attack, you can choose to either Dodge or Parry the oncoming attack.
Dodging successfully at the last second before an attack hits will result in a Perfect Dodge, and the enemy will not deal any damage to your characters.

Parrying an attack has the same timing as the Perfect Dodge, which requires you to wait until the last minute.
Performing a successful Parry will restore 1 AP and avoid damage. Parrying all of the enemy's attacks also result in your character performing a Counter attack!
There is also the option to skip the current character's turn entirely.
If a fight is getting too hard to handle, there is the option to Flee the fight. When selecting to Flee, your enemies will have a final chance to attack you and you will have to dodge the attacks.
Successfully fleeing will exit the combat mode, but you will still be near the enemy in the overworld.

Certain items, skills, and weapons can give your characters buffs, and apply debuffs to your enemies! There are also specific buffs and debuffs that can be applied during battle.

Some enemies have Weak Points that you can hit with the use of Aim Shots. Successfully hitting these Weak Points deal increased damage against the enemy.

Enemies also have a Break Bar beneath their health bars that get filled every time they take damage.
When the Break Bar is filled, attack with certain skills such as Gustave's Overcharge to inflict Broken on the enemy and apply the Stun status effect!
You can check if a skill can trigger Break in the skill's description.

Most enemies in the game also have certain Elemental Weaknesses, which means they can take additional damage from specific Elemental attacks. It's best to take note of the Weakness an enemy may have and attack accordingly.
