Reactive Turn-Based Combat System Guide
Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 combines turn-based RPG gameplay with real-time elements. Its reactive turn-based combat system has players take turns performing actions like attacking or defending, with the turn order clearly shown on the left side of the screen.
During your turn, you’ll manually execute attacks, and some moves include real-time button prompts that let you deal extra damage if timed correctly. When enemies attack, you need to stay alert and react in real time to defend your team and minimize damage.
How to Attack
To attack in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, start by selecting the Attack command on your turn. Then, choose your target. Keep in mind that the power of your attack depends on your character's abilities, the enemy’s weaknesses, and the timing of your move.
Parry, Dodge, and Counter
Parry, Dodge, and Counter are defensive moves that let you avoid damage and punish enemies when timed right. A well-timed parry can block an attack and open up a chance to counter, while dodging helps you slip past hits entirely.
Flee Option Available: Escape When the Fight Gets Too Dangerous
In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players can choose to flee from battle when things get too dangerous, giving the party a chance to retreat and prepare for the next encounter.
Turn-Based Combat Guide and Tips
Learn Character Skills and Abilities
Each character has unique abilities. Gustave uses a pistol for weak point attacks and a sword for melee damage. Maelle can switch between Offensive, Defensive, and Virtuose stances.
Lune boosts her AoE magic with Elemental Stains, while Sciel uses Sun and Moon Charges to enter a powerful Twilight state. Monoco has a Bestial Wheel that enhances skills and can learn abilities from enemies.

Get Loot from Combat and Exploration
You can earn loot by defeating enemies and exploring the map. Enemy drops often include useful items, while hidden spots throughout the world may contain valuable rewards.
Get Familiar with Leveling
You can gain XP from defeating enemies, as you level up each character will earn points to upgrading attributes and skill points to unlock new abilities.
Leveling up not only improves your party’s performance in battle but also opens up new strategies as tougher enemies appear later in the game.
Set Up Camp and Craft Items
Players can set up camp at any point on the map. Over time, the camp develops as the story unfolds, with new NPCs appearing and more companions joining in. It's a chance to take a break, chat with your team, craft items, and upgrade your gear.
