How to Unlock An Aegis Against the Miasma

Gain Access to the Automech Repair Center

There are 3 ways to gain access to the Automech Repair Center (ARC). If you want to enter without passing skill checks, obtain the ARC Access Pass from the Ministry of Accuracy (found along the coast to the west of Fairfield). You can print the access pass from a 2nd floor terminal within the main building.

However, if you have either Engineering 3 or a combination of Engineering 2 and Speech 3, you can head directly to the ARC and pass the corresponding skill checks to get Cade Tierny (gate guard) to let you in:

Sub-Mechanist Cade Tierney Skill Checks
Engineering IconEngineering: 2

Speech IconSpeech: 3
You can get through with an Engineering check at Lvl 2 followed by a Speech check of Lvl 3.
Engineering IconEngineering: 3
With Engineering at level 3, you can immediately be let through.

Speak to Donelson and Bryant to Start the Quest

Once you have access to the ARC, head towards the central courtyard to find Marshal Donelson. After you offer to help out with their zyranium gas problem, he'll direct you towards Chief Deviser Delphinia Bryant. Offer her to help with her experiment to start the quest.

3 Give the Catalytic Amplifier to Delphinia

Collect a Zyranium Sample

Step-by-step Walkthrough
1

After speaking to Donelson, head to Delphinia who is in the base as well. Agree to help her with the experimental gadget and she will ask you to collect Zyranium Gas. She then hands you a Zyranium Collector item.
2

Head to the contaminated building’s exterior wall and find the Zyranium gas leaking out. Step into the gas cloud to safely collect the Zyranium when the prompt appears.
3

Return to Delphinia with the gas sample to continue. She then asks you to find a Catalytic Amplifier

Find a Catalytic Amplifier

How to Obtain a Catalytic Amplifier
Convince Chief Mechanist Woodrow to Give You One Take It From the Destroyed Dragoon

Delphinia will then need you to collect a Catalytic Amplifier that is needed to complete the Gadget, and there are two methods of obtaining it. Either by convincing Chief Mechanist Woodrow to give up his, or taking one from a missing dragoon west of the base.

Method 1: Convince Chief Mechanist Woodrow to Give You One

Step-by-step Walkthrough
1

To convince Woodrow, you can either pass a Leadership or Speech check, or use Donelson’s Terminal Log to persuade him.

If you have either the Level 2 Leadership or Level 3 Speech requirements, he will give the device immediately.
2

If you don’t meet the skill requirements, you can go to Donelson’s office and access his terminal. You can use it with no problem, even if Donelson is standing right there.
3

Open and read the terminal log labeled "SUBJECT: Woodrow".
4

You now have the option to tell Woodrow about the log, and he will give the Catalytic Amplifier right up.

Method 2: Grab the Device From the Disabled Dragoon

Step-by-step Walkthrough
1

You can also grab an amplifier outside the base. Head west of the ARC towards the missing Dragoon marker.
2

The disabled Dragoon will have a few Crabbles defending it. Deal with them and interact with the fallen mech on the ground.
3

Strip the automech for its parts, giving you a Catalytic Amplifier. You can return to the ARC afterward.

Give the Catalytic Amplifier to Delphinia

With the Catalytic Amplifier in hand, return to the ARC and give it to Delphinia. She will assemble the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus gadget and hand it to you, completing the quest and granting you 810 XP.

Pass Through Zyranium With the Gas-Energy Deflection Apparatus

This gadget allows you to temporarily pass through heavily contaminated Zyranium areas, especially the areas required during the Vanquishing the Vexing Vapors or Above and Beyond Repair side quests.

It also enables you to cross one of the paths leading to the northern part of Paradise Island during The Saboteur of Paradise main quest by passing through the Zyranium field north of the Ministry of Accuracy.

Use it cautiously and wait for it to recharge when its meter is low, or it may run out while you are still in Zyranium contamination, causing almost instant death.

I'm not sure what the trigger is, but after completing "Friends IN High Places", the gadget will just be in the Dr. Bryant's Lab, on a counter with a note titled "NOTES ON THE SHIELD GADGET"

If you try to do this after completing the Vox base you won't be able to get the quest and will have to buy the gadget from Delphine for like 1600 bits. The Marshall will still direct you to her as if you can do the quest, but you just won't have an option to do it for her.
