Professor for Lore and Dialogue Checks
Professors are well-learned individuals, although they can be a bit of a snob when talking to people who are not as smart as they are.

Lawbringer for Good Playthroughs
Lawbringers, as the name implies, bring the law wherever they go. They are the defender of the weak, and the enemy of all evil.
As such, picking the Lawbringer Background is the best if you plan on doing a good playthrough, as you will gain access to more righteous and good-leaning conversation options.
Ex-Convict for Evil Playthroughs
Ex-Convicts are capable of getting their hands dirty if needed. They also have no qualms using any means necessary to get the job done, even if it means breaking the law.
Because of this, picking the Ex-Convict Background is the best option for evil playthroughs, as their conversation options allow you to say things or commit acts that no law-abiding citizen would say or do.
Roustabout for Comedy
Roustabouts are treated as one of the most feared Earth Directorate agents, when in reality they just wanted to be a cashier. Being in the right place at the wrong time gave them a promotion that they are very much ill-prepared for.
Picking the Roustabout provides comedy during your playthrough, as your dialogue options turn you into a clueless, unqualified protagonist who somehow still ends up saving the day.

Backgrounds provide additional dialogue options in certain conversations, allowing you to roleplay as your chosen Background. Some of these dialogue options can lead to great results, while others can make your reputation worse.
Players are encouraged to select options that their Background provides for the full experienced. This is, however, not required, especially if choosing said option will prevent you from accomplishing things the way you want to.
