Auntie's Choice vending machines labeled Weapon Modification Vending sell all kinds of mods for your weapons and armor. Make sure to keep a lookout for these specific vending machines if you're on the hunt for new mods.

Craft Your Own Mods at a Workbench

Install Mods at Workbench
You can craft mods of your own using loot you've collected from enemies and materials you've broken down at the Workbench. However, you'll need the requisite Crafting Recipe in order to create these mods.
How to Craft

How to Use Mods

In order to do anything relating to mods, you first need to find a Workbench. There is one in your ship and you can usually find one outside of stores like Auntie's Choice.

Select Modification to Install Mods

Install Mods on Specific Weapons

Select the Modification option at a Workbench to install mods onto your equipment. This will permanently integrate the mod into the equipment and you won't be able to get the mod back afterwards.

Note that Mods are made for specific weapons and can't be used on other weapons.

Select Crafting to Create Mods

Craft Mods

Select the Crafting option at a Workbench to Craft your own mods. This can only be done if you have the requisite crafting recipe as well as enough crafting materials.

You can obtain a crafting recipe by obtaining a mod for the first time. You will then be able to craft that mod as many times as you desire afterwards.

Obtain Materials by Breaking Down Mods

Obtain Materials by Breaking Down Mods

If you so desire, you can break down the mods you own by selecting Breakdown at a Workbench. This will destroy the mod and give you some crafting materials back.

Can You Remove Mods?

No, but You Can Replace Them

You cannot remove mods when you have already applied them to a weapon, but you can replace a mod with a different one of the same mod slot.

Do note that doing this will result in the previous mod being destroyed, so it would be wise to first weigh out the advantages before committing.
