Crouch behind cover or in tall grass to sneak in The Outer Worlds 2. Learn how to sneak and what you can do while sneaking in this guide!
List of Contents
To sneak, crouch behind cover or in tall grass. This makes enemies unable to see you from a distance. Use it to sneak by safely or get the drop on them.
If you’re in a hostile area with human and/or automech enemies, a Trespassing warning will appear next to the minimap, indicating that you’ve entered their territory illegally.

While sneaking, enemies that see or hear you will build awareness, shown by the small bar above them. If they find you, they’ll become Alerted and attack. Crouching both makes it significantly harder for an enemy to see you or hear your footsteps, and slows the rate that enemies that can spot you.
| Status | Description |
|---|---|
Aware |
Enemies are becoming aware of your presence. Walking into their line of sight or approaching too quickly will increase their awareness. |
Suspicious |
Enemies become Suspicious and will investigate the source of the noise or your sighting. Reposition to a different hiding spot so the enemy returns to being Aware again. |
Alerted |
Enemies become Alerted to your presence and will attack. They’ll call for reinforcements, alerting the rest of the area as well. |
Attacking unaware enemies while crouched will perform a sneak attack. For most weapons, this lets you preview your damage with the purple bar on their HP and prepare a power attack, weak spot hit, or charged shot with certain guns.
One handed melee weapons deal bonus sneak attack damage in addition to their normal or power attack damage. Look for mods and perks to gain additional sneak attack damage with other weapons.

Sneaking also allows you to steal items, lockpick containers (Lockpick skill and Mag-Picks required), and pickpocket unaware enemies (Pickpocket perk required). However, each time you commit a crime, you'll receive a bounty with the faction you committed the crime against.
