How to Unlock A Healthy Improvement
Approach VAL in the Incognito
After waking up at the Incognito during the main quest, Recalling the Score, VAL will automatically speak to you in the cargo bay as you approach the exit, asking for your assistance and triggering the quest.

Open the Lockbox for the Dematerializer
During your conversation with VAL, they will provide you with an Advanced Decryption Key to unlock the lockbox next to you. Open it to obtain Auntie’s Acidic Dematerializer, a Gadget that is mainly used to disintegrate corpses to hide evidence and avoid detection.
Afterward, the next lockbox containing VAL’s upgrades will cycle in, requiring additional keys to unlock.

The lockbox with VAL's upgrades requires 4 Advanced Decryption Keys to open. These keys can be looted around Paradise Island and Arcadia, given as task or quest rewards, or bought from certain shops.
Unlock the New Lockbox to Retrieve the Mod Kit
With four keys in hand, return to the Incognito's cargo bay and open the lockbox to retrieve VAL's Mod Kit.
Upgrade VAL on a Workbench

| 1 |  Head to the Incognito Workbench at the lower floors. You can access any Workbench for this, but the one on the ship is already nearby. |
| 2 |  Select Party Upgrades on the right. |
| 3 |  Select your Weapon and Armor upgrades for VAL. We recommend selecting the Supercooling Coils Frost Blaster upgrade and the Acid-Proof Plating Corrosion Immunity upgrade. After choosing your upgrades, exit the menu, and the quest should be complete, granting you 1404 XP. ▶︎ Best VALERIE Build and Perks |
Chosen Upgrades Can Be Changed at Any Workbench

・ Superheating Coils Superheating Coils VALERIE's weapon applies more stacks of burn. Slight weapon damage increase. ・ Supercooling Coils Supercooling Coils VALERIE's weapon now deals Frost damage. Significant weapon damage increase.

・ Acid-Proof Plating Acid-Proof Plating VALERIE becomes immune to Corrosive side-effects. Increases armor effectiveness. ・ Static-Resistant Plating Static-Resistant Plating VALERIE becomes immune to Shock side-effects. Increases armor effectiveness.

The upgrades you choose for VAL or any other companion are not permanent, and can be swapped freely at any Workbench to suit your needs.
We recommend going with Supercooling Coils for Frost damage, which is rare early on and useful for slowing melee enemies.
Then, Acid-Proof Plating to make VAL immune to Corrosion, effectively making them much more survivable against the Corrosion weakness debuff.
