Complete Side Quests and focus on acquiring weapons and skills first in The Outer Worlds 2. Read on to learn everything you should do first on to ensure the best possible start in this guide!
List of Contents

Upon starting the game, it’s best to adjust your settings to your liking, such as your preferred Visual Mode, Difficulty, and Language. You can also check the Accessibility settings for options that can help enhance your experience. The settings can be changed at any time during the game, so feel free to experiment and adjust as you go.

Main Quests can be challenging if you’re underleveled or still lack the proper Skills and equipment. We recommend completing Side Quests in early-game areas like Fairfield first. Some Side Quests can even make Main Quests easier or unlock alternate approaches by providing useful intel from NPCs.

Some Side Quests aren’t marked on the map, so be sure to talk to named NPCs in each area, especially those calling out to you for help or offering opportunities.
Get the double jump ability as soon as possible. This will increase your vertical mobility, allowing you to leap across high areas and reach places that would otherwise be inaccessible with a normal jump. To unlock double jump, progress through the Perilous Journey to the Grove side mission and start A Final Death for Gravity.

One of the side quests that you need to do soon is Above and Beyond, as you will receive the Zyranium Shield Gadget. Activating the shield gadget grants a temporary shield against gas hazards, especially Zyranium.

While exploring Fairfield, you may come across a Science Adventures Quarterly volume. If you find one, bring it to Redactor Quesnel. She’ll ask you to collect a total of ten magazines. Finding all ten will reward you with the Townie Clothing, an armor that grants +20% Evasion Chance and +50% Combat Sprint Speed, which should give you a leg up in combat.

You can mark favorite on Perks you’re aiming for, making leveling up more organized and smooth. This helps you focus on the Perks that best suit your Build, allowing you some leeway to invest in Bypass Perks for choices that matter to you.

After the first few quests and getting some Bits, start buying the necessary weapons and ammo for your Build. For example, if you want to focus on the Medical Skill, then buy a Bio-Mass Pistol. Weapons are somewhat rarer to find in vending machines, so buy weapons whenever they’re available.

After getting yourself settled with equipment, it is recommended to explore the map as much as possible so you don't miss out on hidden loot, secret side activities, and even Easter eggs. Be curious, always!
Furthermore, you will naturally unlock fast travel points through this method and earn XP by unlocking new areas!

Later in your journey, you should do Niles and Inez's Companion Quests, as they're rewards are a significant help for the content in the game. Both questlines have branching paths, so be prepared to make some choices.
