The best positive traits players can get are Brilliant and Lucky, while the best negative trait you can get is Dumb.
Brilliant |
・During skill selection, Specialize in 1 additional skill. Specialized skills start with 2 points. |
|---|
Briliant is a powerful Trait as it allows you to Specialize in a third skill, effectively acting as a free level up (albeit without the HP increase). This helps you unlock useful perks earlier, as well as provide an early game boost.
Lucky |
・+5% Critical Chance
・Certain opportunites are just accessible to you. |
|---|
Lucky is another great Trait, not only because of the 5% Critical Chance, but also because it can provide alternate solutions to numerous interactions that would normally require difficult skill checks or intricate dialogues.
It's important to note, however, that not all interactions are affected by Lucky.
Dumb |
・During skill selection, lock 5 of the 12 available skills. Those skills can never have points added to them. |
|---|
Although Dumb sounds bad because it prevents five skills from being leveled, it is actually the strongest negative trait, especially if you already have a build in mind.
As most builds require you to only level a few skills anyway, locking out the ones you won't level does not affect your gameplay in any way.
Brawny |
・Sliding or sprinting into hostiles will knock them down. 5 seconds cooldown. |
|---|
Brawny is a good skill for melee builds or even short-range gun builds, as it allows you to knock enemies down, making them easy targets for you and your party.
This trait, however, is not as useful for stealth builds, or if you want to prioritize long-ranged weaponry like sniper rifles.
Heroic |
・-20% Companion Ability Charge Time |
|---|
Heroic lowers Companion Ability Charge Time, allowing you to use them more often. While this is a good Trait, you can achieve similar effects using Perks and Equipment, so it is not as important.
Nimble |
・+25% Crouch Speed
・+25% Combat Sprint Speed |
|---|
Nimble is perfect for getting close to enemies quickly, as well as for faster sneaking. Similar to Heroic, however, you can get similar buffs from certain Perks and Equipment. Only get this Trait if you really want to maximize either of the movement speeds.
Innovative |
・Crafting recipes for ammo, throwables and resources create up to twice as many of those items for the same amount of crafting materials. |
|---|
Innovative is a helpful Trait that doubles your crafting yield when making ammo, throwables, and resources. While this is helpful, you will normally be able to find enough ammo and crafting materials to last you the entire game. As such, this trait is not a priority.
Resilient |
・Death is prevented for 3s the first time you would have died each combat. |
|---|
Resilient prevents death for 3 seconds during a fight, giving you a free second chance to keep fighting. This effect, however, can only happen once per combat, so you will no longer be able to prevent death if you die a second time.
Sickly |
・-15% Base Health
・-15 Toxicity Crash Threshold |
|---|
Sickly is the second-best negative trait, useful for builds that don't see much active combat, such as stealth builds or diplomacy builds. However, the reduced HP and Toxicity Threshold makes it difficult for more combat-focused builds.
Suave |
・10% discount at vendors.
・Bounty must be two times higher than normal to be seen as an Outlaw. |
|---|
While the vendor discount and increased bounty requirement may seem useful, there are certain Flaws, Perks, and Equipment that can already provide the same effects.
Witty |
・Reputation with any faction can never decrease below neutral.
・Penalties such as vendor surcharges from negative reputation prevented. |
|---|
Witty is a great trait for players who want to play as likable characters. However, as players can easily earn reputation by choosing the correct dialogue options or by avoiding unnecessary killing, this Trait loses its usefulness.
Abrasive |
・Reputation with any faction can never increase above Neutral, preventing any bonuses that would be gained from having a positive reputation with a faction such as vendor discounts. |
|---|
Abrasive is the opposite of Witty, in that it's for players who don't want to be likable. Also similar to Witty, you can easily keep your reputation in the negatives by actively choosing the aggressive dialogue options, as well as unnecessarily killing faction members.
You will select your character's traits during character creation, right after selecting what your Background is. Additionally, you can also select your traits after the Prologue, as you are given the option to change your build after waking up.
