In Outer Worlds 2, there are a total of six companions that you can unlock and recruit. These six companions are Niles, VALERIE, Inez, Aza, Tristan, and Marisol.
Each Companion has their own backstory, skills, personality, and gameplay that can affect how you play the game.
Whenever you exit your ship to continue your travels, you can bring up to two companions with you. Other companions will stay on the ship until you return. You can change your chosen companions at any time by returning to the ship and leaving again.
It is possible to fail in recruiting companions, leading to them being unavailable for the rest of the game. This can happen if you choose the wrong options while recruiting them, or if you fail to recruit them before a Point of No Return.
All Missables and Points of No Return
It is also possible for companions to leave you permanently, preventing you from progressing their questline or including them in your party. This can happen if you perform actions that go against their beliefs, or if you pick dialogue options that they do not like.
Companions help you out during travels, be it during combat or while you are exploring. In combat, companions can use their chosen weapon to attack enemies and have powerful abilities that can turn the tide of battle when activated.
Outside of combat, companions can sometimes have unique dialogue options in quests, providing alternate ways of completing objectives. They can also chime in during conversations to give you their thoughts, giving you more context for the decisions that you need to make.
Whenever you level up, companions will level up with you, with their HP increasing with each level. Additionally, companions receive a perk point every 5 levels, which you can use to pick between one of two Perks per tier.
EXP Farming Guide: How to Level Up Fast
During your travels, your companions will sometimes ask you to complete a request, which will reward you with a Mod Kit. These Mod Kits allow you to upgrade your companion's weapon and armor.
These upgrades can change your companion's damage type, make them immune to a certain damage type, and more.
