Should You Kill or Spare Montelli?

Add to Watchlist

Should You Kill or Spare Montelli

During The Saboteur of Paradise in The Outer Worlds 2, you can kill or spare Montelli depending on your actions before confronting him. However, there's really no difference in gear rewards regardless of your choice. Read on to learn what happens whether you kill Montelli or not.

Kill or Spare Montelli Outcomes

Choice Result
Kill Montelli ・You obtain Montelli's equipment.
・+300 XP for defeating him
Spare Montelli ・You obtain Montelli's equipment without combat.
・Montelli's fate is unknown, although he implies he will be hanged.
・His info helps later down the line during the On the Trail of the Traitor.
・Corbin will be kinder to you.

During The Saboteur of Paradise, you will encounter Montelli in Vox Relay Station as the first boss in Outer Worlds 2. If you have completed the required steps and successfully passed the Speech level check, you can then have the choice to kill Montelli or not.

Should You Kill or Spare Montelli?

Sparing Montelli Unlocks Unique Dialogue

Montelli Speech Check

Choosing to spare Montelli avoids the boss fight entirely and unlocks a unique dialogue where he confesses to being instigated by another party. This path is only available if you complete the prerequisite steps and pass the necessary Speech checks. However, you will miss out on the XP gained from combat.

Killing Montelli Yields Extra XP

Defeat Montelli

Choosing to kill Montelli is the default path if you fail the necessary skill checks, meaning you will have a fight against him and his supporting wasps and guards. The primary advantage here is the opportunity to earn extra XP from combat.

In both scenarios, you always receive the Chainspark Cannon and Officer Regalia. Currently, there is no known game-changing impact based on whether Montelli lives or dies, and his ultimate fate after The Saboteur of Paradise quest remains unknown.

How to Spare Montelli

Convince Corbin to Help You and Pass Speech Checks

Speech Skill Requirement: To ultimately convince Montelli to surrender and spare him, you must have a minimum Speech Level of 5. Before confronting him, you must also get Marshal Corbin on your side and get vital information from his terminal.

Steps to Make Montelli Withdraw
1
To convince Montelli to stand down, you must first persuade Marshal Corbin to assist you using the Writ of Conscription (instantly makes Corbin help) which is rewarded after The Saga of Malfunctioning Mechanicals, or you can use your Speech Skill.

Select these dialogue options to get Corbin on board using Speech:

1. [Lie] Horizon Point? Never heard of it. You have me confused for someone else. (Speech 2)
2. As it happens, I'm in the business of deposing tyrants. Just point me at Montelli. (Speech 4)
3. I'm sorry about that. Honestly. Let me make it up to you now. (Speech 2)

After presenting the Writ or choosing these dialogue options, Corbin will agree to help and propose a plan to use Montelli’s terminal to get him to stand down.
2
Follow the quest to Montelli’s office and access his terminal. Send Corbin’s Official Notice, then read all the terminal logs to gather the information needed to convince Montelli to surrender.

3
Exit the office and confront Montelli in the next room. With Corbin’s support, the information from the terminal, and Speech 5, you will have everything needed to persuade him to stand down.

Choose the following dialogue options during the conversation:

1. Crisis? Are you talking about the war with Auntie's Choice?
2. What actions should the Sovereign have taken, in your estimation?
3. These extreme measures were never your idea in the first place, were they, Montelli? (Unlocks if you've read everything in Montelli's terminal.)
4. Do what you know is right, not what your puppeteer tells you. (Speech 5)
