Companion Quests not only tell you more about a companion, but can also provide Mod Kits that can upgrade your companion's weapon and armor, as well as additional perks based on your decisions during the quest. Some companion quests can also affect the companion's ending.

As such, always try to do Companion Quests when they become available.

Niles Abilities and Traits

Overview

Niles Overview Tall Ability Spread Out, I'll Hold 'em!
Niles taunts all enemies in the area before firing three shots at the target, dealing increased damage

Niles has increased evasion and allows him to avoid a percentage of incoming attacks
Field Tinkering
While Niles is in the party, you can use a workbench by talking with him directly

Role in Party

Niles Abara can serve as either the party's Tank or as a Stealth Support. The role he plays in the party will depend on what perks you take, so you will need to decide in advance what role you want him to take.

Additionally, Niles' main weapon is a revolver, so he will primarily be engaging from short to medium ranges. This synergizes well with his companion ability, which allows him to draw enemy fire.

5 I Got 'Em
Niles puts himself in the enemy's line of fire to protect his comrades. Enemies are more likely to target him and he will occasionally fire at enemies not targeting him, taunting them.
I'm Taking 'Em Down
Niles ignores a portion of his target's armor and will target enemy weakpoints to deal more damage.
10 Scrap Engineering
While Niles is in the party, containers have a small chance to contain a large cache of Scrap Metal.
Spotter
While exploring, Niles periodically calls out enemies he spots, revealing them on the mini-map. He also makes it more difficult for enemies to spot you.
15 Self Repairing Armor
Niles builds self-repairing armor plates that protect him from damage. The plates are destroyed after taking moderate damage, and get repaired after not taking damage every few seconds.
Ghost Array
Niles constructs a cloaking device that grants him Camouflaged when he drops below half health.
20 Self Repairing Armor Mod
Learn how to craft Self-Repairing Armor mods at workbenches. Grants a single copy of the mod on selecting the perk.

Learn how to craft Ghost Array mods at workbenches. Grants a single copy of the mod on selecting the perk.
25 Dumb Aggression
Niles' companion ability now Goads rather than Taunts.
Full Cylinder
Niles' companion ability now fires 6 shots instead of 3. Enemies killed by the ability explode and deal damage to other enemies in the area.
30 Force Emitter
When enemies get within melee range of Niles, he activates a sonic shockwave that damages and knockbacks nearby enemies. Also increases Damage Resistance.
Smokescreen Emitter
Nile releases a cloud of smoke on his current piece of cover or position that grants Camouflaged to party members in the area.

Additional Perks

Last Defender After using his companion ability, Niles' Reflex Amplifier is overcharged, negating 100% of incoming attacks for a short duration.
How to Unlock: Finish Do More Harm and convince Niles to keep fighting for the Earth Directorate.
No Problem a Bullet Can't Solve After using his companion ability, Niles' rate of fire is significantly increased, allowing him to down hostiles rapidly in between reloads.
How to Unlock: Finish Do More Harm and convince Niles to give up on the Earth Directorate.

Last Defender and No Problem a Bullet Can't Solve are additional perks you can unlock based on your decisions during Niles' companion quest Do More Harm.

Ricochet Shrapnel Shots
Niles' shots now ricochet off targets and deal damage to a second nearby enemy. Weapon damage increases.
Rail Revolver Barrel
Niles' weapon now deals Shock damage. Significant weapon damage increase.
High-Density Shots
Niles' shots now occasionally knock targets down. Weapon damage increases.

Rubberized Joint Seals
Niles becomes immune to Shock side-effects. Increases armor effectiveness.
Reflex Amplifier Reflection Module
Niles now reflects a portion of attacks back to the attacker. Slightly increases armor effectiveness.
Acid-Proof Joint Seals
Niles becomes immune to Corrosive side-effects. Increases armor effectiveness.
Reflex Amplifier Caster
Niles' Reflex Amplifier applies over an area, increasing your evasion when near him. Greatly increases armor effectiveness.

・Goaded enemies have reduced attack speed, step out of cover, and do not use cover
Force Emitter 30 ・Activates a sonic shockwave when enemies enter melee range that deals damage and knocks enemies back. Has a cooldown.
・+10% Damage Resistance
Additional Perk
Last Defender - ・Negates 100% of incoming attacks for a short duration after using companion ability.

As a Tank, Niles will be taunting enemies and soaking damage, with perks like Self Repairing Armor, Dumb Aggression, and Force Emitter allowing him to take enemy aggro and survive attacks. This build uses I Got 'Em to attract enemy attention during combat, as well as Spotter to help track enemies down.

Once you have access to the Do More Harm quest, make sure to get the additional perk Last Defender to provide an additional layer of damage mitigation for Niles whenever he uses his companion ability.

Additional Perk
No Problem a Bullet Can't Solve - ・Significantly increases rate of fire after using companion ability.

As a Stealth Support, however, he will strengthen your stealth capabilities, while also becoming stealthy himself. Spotter and Smokescreen Emitter will help you and your team hide from enemies, while the Ghost Array Mod will help you hide and relocate in emergencies.

This build also uses I Got 'Em to attract enemy attention during combat, and Spotter to help track enemies down. Once you have access to the Do More Harm quest, make sure to get the additional perk No Problem a Bullet Can't Solve to increase Niles' damage output whenever he uses his companion ability.

Niles' Scrap Armor ・Acid-Proof Joint Seals
・Reflex Amplifier Reflection Module

Rail Revolver Barrel and Ricochet Shrapnel Shots are the best upgrades for Niles' Revolver thanks to the Shock damage conversion, as well as its ability to ricochet to nearby enemies.

As for Niles' Scrap Armor, Acid-Proof Joint Seals, and the Reflex Amplifier Reflection Module are the best upgrades, as not only does it make him immune to Corrosive damage's side effects, but it also allows him to reflect damage to those that attack him.

It's important to note, however, that you can freely change upgrades during your travels, allowing you to adjust to what you need.
