Companion Quests not only tell you more about a companion, but can also provide Mod Kits that can upgrade your companion's weapon and armor, as well as additional perks based on your decisions during the quest. Some companion quests can also affect the companion's ending.
As such, always try to do Companion Quests when they become available.

Niles Abara can serve as either the party's Tank or as a Stealth Support. The role he plays in the party will depend on what perks you take, so you will need to decide in advance what role you want him to take.
Additionally, Niles' main weapon is a revolver, so he will primarily be engaging from short to medium ranges. This synergizes well with his companion ability, which allows him to draw enemy fire.

As a Tank, Niles will be taunting enemies and soaking damage, with perks like Self Repairing Armor, Dumb Aggression, and Force Emitter allowing him to take enemy aggro and survive attacks. This build uses I Got 'Em to attract enemy attention during combat, as well as Spotter to help track enemies down.
Once you have access to the Do More Harm quest, make sure to get the additional perk Last Defender to provide an additional layer of damage mitigation for Niles whenever he uses his companion ability.

As a Stealth Support, however, he will strengthen your stealth capabilities, while also becoming stealthy himself. Spotter and Smokescreen Emitter will help you and your team hide from enemies, while the Ghost Array Mod will help you hide and relocate in emergencies.
This build also uses I Got 'Em to attract enemy attention during combat, and Spotter to help track enemies down. Once you have access to the Do More Harm quest, make sure to get the additional perk No Problem a Bullet Can't Solve to increase Niles' damage output whenever he uses his companion ability.

Rail Revolver Barrel and Ricochet Shrapnel Shots are the best upgrades for Niles' Revolver thanks to the Shock damage conversion, as well as its ability to ricochet to nearby enemies.
As for Niles' Scrap Armor, Acid-Proof Joint Seals, and the Reflex Amplifier Reflection Module are the best upgrades, as not only does it make him immune to Corrosive damage's side effects, but it also allows him to reflect damage to those that attack him.
It's important to note, however, that you can freely change upgrades during your travels, allowing you to adjust to what you need.
