Tracking & Skinning is a gathering Trade Skill in New World. This skill allows players to gather refining and crafting resources from animals scattered across Aeternum.
By leveling this skill up, players will be able to obtain better materials from high-level animals in order to craft equipment with high gear scores. Animals will also appear on players' in-game radars, allowing for easier tracking.
Read on for a step-by-step guide on how to level up the Tracking & Skinning Trade Skill as quickly as possible.

When prioritizing to level up Skinning, the quickest way to do so would be by hunting wolves in any of the Starting Regions. Instead of just running around a region, however, it's best to stick to one Wolf Den since these areas will have numerous wolves that respawn quickly, which maximizes your time. This strategy nets around a 100-120 Skinning XP per wolf.
It's best to hunt at the Dankfur Hollow den in Windsward due to its close proximity to the region's Settlement. Once you've filled up your inventory with leather and meat gathered from wolves, you can easily go back and forth from the settlement in order to increase other Trade Skills.
Similar to Dankfur Hollow, Howling Falls' close proximity to the Settlement in First Light allows you to easily increase not only your Skinning but other Trade Skills as well.
Upon hitting level 70, head to Balmy Veldt in Cutlass Keys and hunt the Corrupted Hounds, named Lushhunt Pointers, that you spot in the area. These creatures will get you to max level quickly since they give almost 400 Skinning XP per hound.
Make sure you're around level 30, however, since they can prove to be difficult enemies at the lower levels. You'll find them commonly roaming the outskirts of Fort Ramos.
While in Balmy Veldt, you'll commonly spot Lions named Island Leopards roaming in the same area as the Corrupted Hounds. Make sure you hunt these animals as well since they give 359 Skinning XP each. Combined with the hounds, you'll hit level 200 in no time.

To maximize the amount of EXP you get from Tracking & Skinning animals, a better Skinning Knife than Flint would be good. This allows you to skin more animals in a shorter period of time due to the durability and gathering speed bonuses offered by better quality knives.
Consider buying better Skinning Knives from the Trading Post or crafting one at your settlement's Workshop when the need arises.

In connection with the previous point, make sure to begin using Skinning Knives with perks once you're able to. A great perk to speed up leveling is Tanner's Discipline, which increases skinning EXP gained from animals.
This doesn't necessarily have to be what you should use, however, as other perks such as Skinning Luck will be helpful in other ways.
Tanner's Discipline | Gain 3% more Skinning experience. |
---|---|
Adored Skinning Luck | While Skinning, gain 5% chance at finding rare items. |
Reinforced Skinning Luck | While Skinning, gain 2% chance at finding rare items. |
Tanner's Burden | Reduce the weight of rawhide, leather, and skinning knives by 5%. |
Skinning Luck | While skinning, gain 2% chance at finding rare items. |
Skinning Yield | Skinning yields 10% more resources. |
Skinning Efficiency | Skinning speed increased by 5% - 25% |
Most non-hostile animals in New World will run away when you approach with a drawn weapon. Invest in a good Bow or Musket to make hunting painless.
Players can get a Bow during one of the first few quests at the starter beach. Alternatively, you can also buy or craft either weapon at a settlement Trading Post or Workshop, respectively.
Predators like Wolves and Lynxes are usually much better to hunt since they give a lot more bonuses than normal prey. On top of the Hunting EXP, players will also be able to earn Regular EXP, Territory Standing, and Weapon Mastery EXP when killing them.
Consider shifting your hunting habits towards hunting Predators when you reach the appropriate level to get much better returns when out hunting!
As you level up and journey from region to region, make sure to keep skinning even while doing other objectives. While you don't have to hunt down every single animal you spot, skinning high-level predators during your adventures will contribute greatly to speeding up the time it'll take to reach level 200.
Proficiency Boosters will allow you to gather even more hide from animals, letting you reach whatever amount you need much quicker. These Boosters increase the amount of resources obtained using tools, so this will also benefit your other Trade Skills.
Skill Levels 115 onwards with their corresponding levels of Animals that can be skinned
At Skill Level 0, players can skin any Animal level 10 or below. This is why hunting wolves in Starting Regions is the best method at low levels, due to their abundance and high Skinning XP over other low-level animals.
The key Skill Levels to look out for will be Level 70, since that will allow you to skin the Lushhunt Pointers, and Level 125, since that will let you start tracking Predators on your radar. This makes finding predators to skin a lot easier and will definitely quicken the pace it'll take to reach Level 200.
