New World - Death Penalty

This is a guide on the death penalty for New World on PC. Read on to know what happens when you die in-game in either PvE or PvP.

What Happens When You Die?

You Can Still be Revived

Dying in New World

When you die in battle, you fall to the ground and remain incapacitated for around 2 minutes. During this time, a player can still revive you.

Note that if an enemy does further damage to you while you're incapacitated, you will die and not be able to revive at the same spot, forcing you to respawn at your last respawn point.

Return to Your Last Respawn Point

Once you're incapacitated, you can choose to press E to Give Up and return to an Inn or the camp you last rested at.

There is a 1 minute cooldown between respawns at the same respawn point.

Possible Respawn Points

  • Last camp rested at
  • Nearest settlement
  • Registered inn

Items and XP are Not Lost

Items and XP are Not Lost

Items and experience points are not lost upon death. You keep everything in your inventory upon respawning. However, it is important to note that your equipment's durability will decrease.

Equipment Durability Goes Down

All equipment in your inventory, both equipped and unequipped (excluding harvesting tools), will suffer a fraction of durability loss upon death. You lose around a tenth of the item's durability in PvE. The durability lost in PvP is around half of that.

This is essentially the biggest drawback as dying, as you will be unable to sell equipment at a trading post unless it has full durability. In order to sell equipment after dying, you will first need to repair it.
