To better explain the decisions we suggest on this guide, we have included major spoilers in several events you'll find in the game. Be wary if this is your first time playing the game! |
Not all characters can be obtained in a single playthrough. There are several characters that becomes missable if a certain character is recuited and vice versa. This is a scene guide on how to be able to recruit all 45 characters and not a full guide on recruiting each individual character. For a full list of all characters and their recruit conditions, see our guide below.
List of Characters and How to Recruit
Involved Characters | |
---|---|
Kid | Leena |
Upon Serge's arrival in Cape Howl (Another World), you'll be confronted by Karsh, Solt, and Peppor. After the fight, a scene where Kid will ask to join your party will happen. Decline her offer three times to ensure that you'll get Leena.
Do not be wary of declining Kid's offer of her joining your party. She will still rejoin the party later on. Agreeing to her offer early on will only make you miss out on Leena which is arguably one of the better characters in the game.
Involved Characters | ||
---|---|---|
Guile | Nikki | Pierre |
Before getting to Viper Manor, you'll have three options for characters to get which are Guile, Nikki, and Pierre. Recruiting one of the three will render the rest of the choices unrecruitable for the rest of the game.
At the start of the game, the better characters you'll have will be Kid and Leena which means you'll have a Red and a Blue innate on your team. The rest of the guides are blue innate characters as well so if you want to avoid a same color team, Guile is the best character to have even if he only starts getting stronger on the later stages of the game.
Save Kid Recruitable Characters | ||
---|---|---|
Korcha | Mel | Razzly |
Do Not Save Kid Recruitable Characters | ||
Macha | Glenn | Doc |
This is a major branching point in the game and will affect the game's story by a whole lot which will of course, affect the characters you can meet along your journey.
Glenn is one of the strongest characters in the game but choosing to save Kid will lock him out of your current playthrough as a playable character. Do not fret as Kid will return to your party later even without your help.
By using the Chrono Cross in Sprigg's house, you'll be able to recruit all characters you have already recruited on your previous playthroughs. The earliest you can possibly recruit all characters in the game is by finishing the game at least three times due to the three unique characters you can recruit as a guide when going to Viper Manor. You'll also need to choose to save Kid if you haven't already and vice versa at least once.
To get back to the Dimensional Vortex and re-recruit your former party members, you'll need to complete the Fort Dragonia (Home World) quest, then use the Astral Amulet on the portal in Hydra Marshes (Home World). Once inside Sprigg's house, simply pull up the item menu and use the Chrono Cross to get back your previously recruited characters.
The primary mechanic of the Chrono Cross is to be able to recruit your whole character roster from the previous game after completing it. If you let Harle leave your party then she won't be included in your re-recruited roster in NG+. Use the Chrono Cross in Opassa Beach as Lynx with Harle in your party to complete the game with her in your roster.
Once you have obtained every possible character you can recruit in each subsequent playthrough, go to Sprigg's house and use the Chrono Cross. This will allow you to recruit back all the characters you got so if you were able to choose each guide and choose to save and not save Kid, you'll be able to get all missable characters!

You forgot one detail. You must beat the TD(abbreviated to avoid spoilers) with Harle in your party if you want her. She is the only character that will leave your party despite your best efforts to keep her. You will need to create a save when she joins, then come back to it, and use continue + to beat TD, and then save your clear file. Most people save this one for last.
