Assist Counter in Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) is a mechanic that lets you do a Dodge Counter and a Defensive Assist at the same time. See a tutorial on how to do Assist Counters, tips and tricks, what they are for here!

| Step 1: Do a Perfect Dodge. Step 2: Press the Attack Button to do a Dodge Counter. Step 3: Immediately press the Assist Button in the same attack cue to initiate a Defensive Assist. |
To do an Assist Counter, you'll need characters who use Defensive Assists, a fast reaction time, and even faster fingers.
As soon as you see a golden cue, dodge with your active character, then press the Attack button to do a Dodge Counter as usual, but almost simultaneously press the Assist Button to initiate a Defensive Assist.
Try it out for yourself in the VR Training with various characters. Do take note that an Assist Counter is much more effective if you use characters who initiate Defensive Assists instead of Evasive Assists.
With enough practice, you'll be able to consistently execute Assist Counters!

When practicing Assist Counters in VR Training, try fighting enemies with long attack animations and predictable attack patterns that are visible from a distance. The enemies above are just a few examples.
Enemy attacks with long wind-ups are perfect for practicing Assist Counters, such as when the Wanted Enforcer pulls back for a punch or when the Dullahan swings its blade back for a strike.

It might also help if you turn on enemy invulnerability when training in VR to ensure that your training dummy remains intact. You can even disable stunnable enemies to ensure that they just keep attacking.

It's important to familiarize yourself with the inputs you need, much like familiarizing yourself with the ingredients of a recipe. You need three things for an Assist Counter: dodge, counter, and switch.
Once you've oriented your fingers properly, practice these three inputs in very quick succession until you find a rhythm. Keep doing it until you're familiar enough with the controls that you become faster at pressing them.
Instead of pressing all three buttons at even speeds, try to press the Counter and Switch buttons closer together, almost at the same—almost, but not quite.
Pay closer attention to pulling off the counter and initiating the Defensive Assist instead of the dodge. We have found that it works best that way.

You might also want to re-map your controls to make it easier to perform Assist Counters. You can opt to map these controls to buttons on your keyboard that are close to each other so you can press them in quick succession.

Of course, with intensive and extensive practice comes fatigue. Your eyes may grow weary, your fingers may start to cramp up, and your mind might get so foggy that the controls just start getting jumbled.
When this happens, it's wise to step away for a few minutes to rest your eyes, fingers, and mind, reorient yourself, then go back and try again.

To put it simply, an Assist Counter is fitting a Dodge Counter and a Defensive Assist in one attack cue from an enemy. This leads to a bigger DMG output with additional Daze as a bonus.
You'll know you've done it successfully if you see your previous character do their Dodge Counter animation and the character switching in do their Defensive Assist animation in a single frame.

I beat it but I have no idea how and will probably never be able to do it again
