The New Eridu Defense Force is the Military of the city, similar to how PubSec parallels the real world's police. The Defense Force is divided into Divisions, which are then divided into Squads. Obol Squad, in particular, belongs to the Obsidian Division.
The Defense Force has three main responsibilities: deterring external threats, containing Hollows, and expanding into new territory. Simply put, if a Hollow cannot be handled by H.A.N.D., the Defense Force will exterminate everything inside it.

Orphie Magnusson is an ordinary soldier in Obol Squad, but shows the most promise in terms of potential. However, her role is integral in more ways than one.
Orphie functions as the main body of the squad's actual Captain, Magus, a seasoned Defense Force soldier with more than a decade of experience under her belt.
Orphie and Magus' personalities could not be more different from one another. The former is innocent and optimistic, while the latter has a short fuse and is extremely disciplinarian. Despite this, one could not live without the other for reasons that go beyond mobility.

Magus fought during the fall of the old capital under the command of Isolde. From evacuating citizens and suppressing Ethereal forces, their commander at the time, former Colonel and now Major General Lorenz, reassigned them to defend a certain area.
The entire team perished, leaving only Isolde and Magus as the sole survivors, with the latter on the brink of death.
Agreeing to participate in an experimental research afterwards, her consciousness was transferred to a weapon, allowing her to live on and keep fighting in the Defense Force as an Intelligent Construct.

Among the research projects conducted 11 years ago was a cloning project. This is not to be confused with Silver Company's clandestine and unethical Silver Squad project.
In an attempt to reinstate Magus into the Defense Force, they created a clone of her with the intention of transferring her consciousness into that body instead. However, this clone developed her own personality and consciousness, and became her own person.
This clone grew up to be Orphie and has since been assigned to be the sole wielder of Magus.

Before Magus became who she is now, her true and original name was Orpheus, and she shared a very close partnership with Isolde, her commanding officer at the time. “Magus” was simply a military code name.
When Orpheus' consciousness was transferred to a gun, she completely took on the identity and name of “Magus” in its entirety. In essence, it's as if Orpheus split into two separate entities—Orphie is her body, and Magus is her soul.
Isolde couldn't bring herself to accept this fact, and ultimately joined the Exaltists to avenge her entire Division and claim justice for Orpheus, no matter how twisted the means.

Despite the two soldiers differing drastically in personalities, Orphie and Magus share a relationship akin to that of a mother and daughter.
Orphie has a penchant for sweets and cute things, but desires nothing more than to become a strong soldier to honor Magus. Magus, on the other hand, tries to keep Orphie in check when she gets too distracted by her desires.
Sometimes, however, Magus pretends to “go to sleep” (or “self-diagnostic mode”, as she calls it) simply to turn a blind eye whenever Orphie indulges herself with snacks, desserts, and cute furry animals.
Orphie and Magus Character Guide

Soldier 11 is a soldier in Obol Squad who specializes in frontline assault and close-quarters combat. Many details about her remain a mystery, for even she can't remember much of her past.
Since Soldier 11 is part of a military group, she's very secretive about many things. However, from her Agent Story and Trust Events, it's known that she likes spicy noodles, is fond of cats, and is incredibly loyal to the Defense Force.

Unbeknownst to her for the longest time due to memory loss, Soldier 11 used to be a soldier of the Silver Squad, a team of clones created by the now-defunct Silver Company.
The creation of Silver Squad came at great, unethical costs, and its members ultimately perished...save for a few. Soldier 11 was unknowingly saved by her Captain, Soldier 0 Anby, from a suicide mission, which led to her survival.
Back then, the members of Silver Squad gave each other names based on pleasant-sounding words. Soldier 11 was known as Harin by her sisters.

Trigger is the sniper of Obol Squad who primarily offers fire support from far distances and high vantage points, hitting targets with near-perfect precision.
Ironically, however, Trigger is visually impaired. The goggles she wears over her Ether-corrupted eyes enable her to accurately pick up enemy and environmental readings when in a Hollow via Ether Vision, but outside of it, she can't see anything.
It's because of this impairment that Trigger possesses extremely heightened senses, enabling her to detect increased heart rates and pick up sounds from afar to determine the current conditions of the environment.

According to her Agent Story, Out of Sight, Trigger belonged to the Lyre Squad of the Chrysoberyl Division, which fell during the fall of the old capital due to lack of reinforcements.
She held the members of Lyre Squad dear and they all shared a tight-knit relationship with one another under their commanding officer, Charon.
During her first collaboration with Phaethon, Trigger momentarily took up the name “Charon” before fully going by “Trigger” upon her induction into Obol Squad.

Seed is Obol Squad's heavy weapons expert and pilots a mech named Seed Sr. According to her Partner Archive entry, her real name is Flora.
Seed, apart from prodigious knowledge in mechanical engineering, possesses an Ether aptitude that exceeds even that of someone with a perfect Ether aptitude score. She can withstand Ether effects for as long as half a month.
Seed's disposition is considered by many to be odd. She always wears a deadpan smile even in situations where she isn't supposed to, makes blunt remarks, and tends to act recklessly. Despite this, her mission record remains flawless, according to Captain Magus.

Seed was raised by Seed Sr., one of the many Intelligent Constructs mass-produced by the Defense Force, alone in the Defense Force dormitories. Although he didn't have a clear understanding of how families work or how to raise a child, he still went through with it.
He and Seed shared a close father-daughter relationship, both of them enjoying gardening and drawing pictures. Unfortunately, however, their time together would be cut short.

Seed Sr. was assigned on a search and rescue mission after the fall of the old capital, and almost came back empty-handed... until he stumbled upon a little girl who appeared to be orphaned.
Having the instant urge to protect her, Seed Sr. tried to rush to her, but was stopped by the defense system called the Iron Order, which is implanted in all Defense Force Intelligent Constructs' Logic Cores to prevent them from straying from orders.
The Iron Order ordered Seed Sr. to execute the young girl on account of her being “dangerous”. Seed Sr., however, managed to break free of the Iron Order and suppressed his fire to save the little girl in front of him.

The price to pay for breaking the Iron Order is a severely damaged Logic Core. Since it is hardwired into every Intelligent Construct's Logic Core, breaking the code would take a significant toll on it and render it damaged beyond repair.
Because of this, Seed Sr. only had a couple of months to live before his consciousness had to eventually pass away, but not before joining Obol Squad and leaving Flora in their care. From there, he passed on the name of “Seed” to the young girl.

Though its origin is currently unknown, Seed has the supernatural power to make the surrounding mechs lose control and spontaneously combust. This destructive power only surfaces when Seed's emotions run high, especially fear.
Perhaps it was because of this that the Iron Order saw her as a threat. Regardless, thanks to Obol Squad and Phaethon, Seed has now learned to manage her emotions and direct them properly.

Seed is highly introverted, and tends to veer away from meeting and interacting with strangers. She does not trust anyone outside of her immediate circle...with the sole exception of Phaethon, whom she likes to call “one of her kind”.
As revealed in her Agent Story, Flora of the Blooming Valley, Seed also hails from Helios Academy—the same academy that Belle and Wise grew up in under the tutelage of their teacher, Carole Arna.
This may also explain why, upon meeting Phaethon, Seed keeps mentioning the she “likes their scent”, much like how a member of a certain animal pack takes kindly to its own kin.
